VIN Tag Placement
VIN Tag Placement
When I bought my truck it was in pieces and the PO began the process of making some sort of hot rod out of it. The VIN tag was screwed into the cowl in the engine compartment near the master cylinder. It matches the number on the frame so I know the tag is correct. I removed the tag from the cowl, completed the bodywork, and now want to put the VIN tag in its proper location, which I believe is the rear side of the driver's door frame below the door latch post. I can find lots of closeups of the VIN tag online but no photos backed off enough so I can get a clear understanding of where exactly the tag is supposed to go and how it is oriented-up/down or left/right. Can someone please post of photo, and maybe a measurement or two, of a VIN tag properly placed for a 68 D100? Also, any idea where I can get the proper rivets? Thanks

Re: VIN Tag Placement
you're right.. i looked through my photos and couldn't find a photo with good perspective...
you can just barely see the corner of the tag in the large version of this shot, near the seatbelt:
(it's oriented vertically)
VIN tag rivets are sort of a sensitive suspect on a lot of forums...
i don't know where to get any but a pop rivet doesn't look too far off
this is what mine look like:

Coelcanth, Sledgehammer;
Thanks very much. Your photos and descriptions were exactly what I needed. Good thing I asked b/c once again, reality differed greatly from what I was thinking!!

Re: VIN Tag Placement
Curious wants to know.....WHY are there not rivet holes in your cab where the original tag WAS???
Re: VIN Tag Placement
The PO filled them in, along with all the holes for the emblems too, during the hot rod transformation.

Re: VIN Tag Placement
Any trucks I've had used Phillips screws to hold the plates on.

Re: VIN Tag Placement
Our Canadian trucks all used screws till 1971. 72 they started using rivets. I have noticed that the cabs on the Canadian Swepty trucks also have holes in door frames for both style of VIN tags.
My truck is younger than me.
