Whats one more gonna hurt?
Whats one more gonna hurt?
So Im eating breakfast today and the owner of the Junkyard was in there, he tells me about a sweptline that came in, said it was pretty bad shape and If I wanted any parts off of it, I better come get em, then he is going to crush it. So I head out there and looky there, its a 67 short box, 318 poly 4 speed, but someone cut the center section out as it had 3.91's in it. So I make a deal and I end up bringing it home with me. I took about 26 inches of 2 1/2" tubing and I shoved it in one axle tube, and slid it into the other axle tube and welded it up, instant solid axle. I beat the roof back to straight and I cleaned all the sand and wood out of the box Now it sits normal and looks normal. I couldnt refuse the thing, its such a cutie, lol
My plan with it is this, I race circle track, and my shop is right across the street from the race track. I want to make a track packer and tow truck out of it. The junk yard owner hooked me up with a dually rear end, all the metal to make the boom, and a 12 volt hyrdaulic pump off of a tommy lift gate. Gonna be sweet. The thing has no title, so Im gonna give it a second chance at life other than being a parts truck.
Of course it has the usual clutch pedal that is on the floor like all of these 68 and older trucks have, so Ill need to rebuild the master. The motor turns over, so I hope it runs, ran out of time today, the days arent all that long yet. I also need to get a key made, Ill do that tomorrow. would be sweet if I could get it to run. If not Ill pull the poly, and put an la in there out of something else.
Too dark to get an after picture, but this is after I got it loaded, you can see the crusher in the back ground, I would have cried.

Leave it to you to take something that everyone else would have passed on and make something out if it. Because of you I now have to second guess every decision I make about a project and say to myself; "what would Cageman do?" Although I usually end up scratching my head forever before I end up deciding I can't do that anyway.
You should just start your own tech line. 1-800-CAGEMAN! I would have you on speeddial.

YES!!! Nice!
Re: Whats one more gonna hurt?
Nice score! Is the box in decent shape?
Like the others, I'm interested in seeing
the roof job. If all else fails, you
can use it as a flower pot in front of the
shop.

I vote convertible also
Re: Whats one more gonna hurt?
Ha ha, you guys crack me up. What would cageman do,
The back of the cab is fine, and the truck will sit outside, so no convertable for this truck. Ill just fix this cab the best I can and put a windshield back in it. Maybe Ill find a sunroof to hide all the ripples in the middle, like I said, not a show truck, just gotta be functional, and reliable.
Im thinking a roll cage too, always wanted to make one for these trucks. That way I will have something sturdy to mount the cop car lights I have stashed away I got from an old BIA cop car, I got all the wiring and controls for that, might as well put em to use. Hopefully I can get the local business that wires cop cars to give me guidance on how to do it, or do it for me.
I have been itching to make the 5 gallon bucket lid pie plates for this too, lol

Re: Whats one more gonna hurt?
I had amybe a 1/2 hour before sunset yetserday to tinker. I put a fresh battery in it, cleaned up the battery posts and ran a jumper wire to the coil from the battery, stuck a screwdriver across the starter relay, and found out how much I hate those direct drive starters!
I poured some gass into the vent of the carb, wroked the throttle a bit and gas actually squirted out of the squirters. I took off the fule line from the tank onthe pump and hooked up my temporary boat tank and turned it over a few times, fuel pump was pumping. Motor was turning over fine, so I hooked up the coil wire and it popped off a few times, but the starter was hot already and turning really slow. I need to come up with a design to mount a newer starter on these old direct drive starter equipped trucks. They sure are battery killers. Im thinking off of a chrysler minivan maybe will work. Gotta do some experimenting
