rx1mtnman,
383's & 440's make great truck motors, add a mild intake, a good duel plain intake, & elec. choke carb and don't forget electronic ingnition. Also a good idea is a R.V. Cam. You'll have a real puller and get much better millage. The exhaust manifold I'm told work great for trucks, how ever I'd like something to flow a little better. You could Duel exhaust or I ran 2" from the manifolds into a single 3" out the passenger side. Not to mention the reliablity you'll add. I used the new Summit Carb. with Electric Choke and so far so good.
The biggest thing killing your milage is the gearing, you probalby have 4.10's or 4.56's, I swapted to 92' Axles with 3.54's and have lots of pulling power and way better milage. Not to mention I can run on the freeway at well over 70 mph.
Originaly I was going to build a Cummins for mine, but I couldn't see five to eight thousand dollars to set it up and still have to change gearing. So I started with Gearing and swapped my 383 for a freshend 440 with the above mentioned Items. I pull trailers effortlessly. I was nervios about the gears until I tested it.
Cummins Guys, don't get me wrong I love the Cummins and you'r trucks, it just didn't fit my budget.
Just things to think about.

I'm liking Jimmie's ideas on freshening up that 383 you have now.

The Cummins is an awesome engine.... but that 383 will probably be able
to tackle pretty much everything you need it to do. Besides... nothing
sounds better than a big block with a nicely tuned exhaust system.

You want it? It has new dual exhaust...it does have a tick in it..not sure but I think it's a lifter. The day I took this I had to hammer on a snow drift pretty hard to get though and it seemed like after I had the rpm's up....way up! that it quieted down for a bit...my brother in law said sometimes the hydraulic lifter won't pump up/bad lifter?nfury8 wrote:Nice! 500,000 miles and it needs bearing and rings. gets 24 mpg. And when someone cuts you off, you hammer on it and smoke em out. Oil changes go 10 to 15 thousand, depending on the oil sample. Has tons of power. No more downshifting, ever. Pull 24,000 pounds and still get 15 mpg.
The only downfall I have with my cummins swepty, all the people that crowd you whenever you stop. I guess that is why I put a 57 gallon fuel tank in it. 1300 miles before I have to fill. Less opportunity to be crowded at the pump.
I am gathering parts to cummins two crew cabs right now. One is getting a 94 cummins, 5 speed and trnasfer case along with both axles. The other is a two wheel drive that is getting a 93 cummins. I am making this one a roll back. I just acquired a HD 12 volt winch and 12 volt hydro pump, resevoir and cylinder to raise and lower the bed. I dont think I will ever build a gas vehicle again, at least one that needs rebuilding.

Re: Post up a picture of your Crew Cab....
Like I said I love Cummins, I've owned them and Power stokes. Everything for them is two to tree times as much money(Oil,filter, parts,so on). I change my oil for 15 bucks with the filter, Whats a Cummins Cost $35.
To convert from a big block to a Cummins will also cost AT LEAST three times as much money. Not to mention the fabrication and set up time. Fuel is way more expencive and to run more than 60mph on the freeway you will have to change your gears unless you don't mind high RPM's wich will cost at least $1000.00
15mpg pulling 24,000 lbs .... who's leg are you trying to pull?
All I'm sayng is I couldn't justify it. My truck is mostly a pavement pounder and I drive it in town 75% percent of the time. 98% percent of the time its empty. Most of us never pull more than 6000lbs. with my very mild 440 that pulls trailers great and the 3.54 gears I get 14mph all the time.
I don't recall ever seeing a Cummins around here for less than 2000.00 (and that was a good price)plus tranny and everything else.

Re: Post up a picture of your Crew Cab....
Ha, it did get that mpg, and no it isnt arithmatic error. I can do 90 all day long on the interstate pulling my race car too. You probably wont believe that either. My buddies Duramax went limp home mode and I pulled his trailer. He was getting 4 mpg with it, I got 15. Dont get me wrong, his duramxx is a power house, but the ol cummins gets the job done no problem. I have 3.55 gears and 33 inch tall tires in the back, with the 5 speed, it is perfect. I have a 93 cummins in there, so it makes 18 pounds of boost total, but it comes in later, not all in learly like my 94 cummins and my 95 cummins trucks.
I use synthetic, so for 4 gallons, it is 100 bucks, and filter is ten, but I have gone 15,000 miles on an oil change ( I oil sample at ten), so it is way cheaper. My truck gets 24 pulling my race car. It is an open trailer that weighs 2000 pounds and my race car weighs 2450, for a max total of under ten thousand pounds, been over the scales many a time, so I know. I have been to california with it, to Arizona twice and I went to Pensylvania once too, so I am not saying a one time fluke, it gets great mileage everytime. My 95 gets 24 too, and I havent taken the 94 out on the highway, as I blew the clutch truckpullin a duramaxx, and it is still dead.
This ol girl will be running long after any 383 trying to do half the work.
I paid 3000 for a wrecked truck. My other 93 cummins I bought for 2000, the other one I am getting (92) is 2200, My 94 I bought for 3000 and it was a running drivin truck, my 95 I bought wrecked for 2500 with parts. I couldnt even rebuild a big block for what I paid for the whole truck. Big blocks are nice, but you cant pass a gas station. I drive right on by. So if the gas is 30 cents cheaper for cheap stuff, I am way money ahead due to the mileage. Premium is the same price. Back when my dad raced, he pulled with a 440 one ton, it got eight empty and eight pullin, didnt matter. He would have never imagined getting 40,000 miles out of that engine pulling the whole time. I have put that on in three years with mine, and been to each side of the country doing it.
Now if My truck was a big block truck, I would keep it that way and find a small block truck or slant to put a cummins in.

Re: Post up a picture of your Crew Cab....
First of all I hope everyone will excuse a previous typo I made. I was not trying to be gross or inaproprate! Please excuse me.
Cageman, You just made the statement that I was trying to get a crossed. To ever see any kind of better milage; Gears are a must. I changed my gears so I would be part way their to a Cummins in the future. As it turned out the gears are great for the 440 also. All I'm saying is I've personally never experanced that kind of milage with Powerstokes or Cummins. Most people that claim those numbers will finally admit that they don't actually take the milage properly and the second they pull trailers those numbers are long gone.
As we all know all to well the expence of restoring a truck is mind blowing. I took the route that got my truck on the road in great working order, painted, and interior done so I could use it. If I had done a Cummins it would still be sitting and I'd be saving thousand of dollars to finish it.
Once again I hope everyone will excuse my previous typo. I have fixed it.

Re: Post up a picture of your Crew Cab....
I recently bought a 67 crewcab with a slant 6. I was wanting to convert the truck to a big block because a felt that a cummins swap was going to be to expensive. After researching would agree with cageman and that I can buy a wrecked cummins in the 2500 to 3000 range. Everyone has their own idea what they want to do with thier truck. I just know that for me the slant 6 is going to be replaced by cummins.

Re: Post up a picture of your Crew Cab....
That reminds me, If my truck was a six or a small bock (which are all great motors-just not for me in a rig this big), I would not have swapped to a big block I probably would have gone to the Cummins.
And about the gears, I don't think anyone would want to swap to 3.5's if they had a six or a small block.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, The great thing about our hobby is we are all free to build things how we see fit. In the end we all support and admire the next guy for how he built his truck/car.
NOW - I want to see more Crewcabs, after all that is what this post was about.

Here is a pic of my 68 crew shortbox saved it from the autowreckers. Has a 318 poly with 4 speed and 4.10 posi. has factory power brakes and power steering. managed to get the engine running but one of the lifters is blown up. the rear seat was gone and there was evidence of maybe a generator back there for a welder because of the huge 6 inch hole through the roof and and gas spout in the rear cab pillar. I remember walking up to this truck in the boneyard thinking what kind of ugly truck is that. This was the first swepty i had seen in my life and i knew i had to have it. and it all snowballed from there.

Here's my '66 on a stretched '90 cummins chassis- and +1 to the cummins fanatics!! Nothing better than good power, fuel economy, longevity, and reliability!! I have this truck, am building a '74 Ramcharger on a shortened '92 Cummins chassis, and have another '90 6bt engine and trans for my '67 W200... The 5" straight pipe and fuel pin in this truck make it an absolutely sexy sounding beast.I love the 383 in my '67- with headers and dual 2.5" flowmaster exhaust it absolutely sends chills up my spine at an idle. The reality is that I can't afford my 80 mile daily commute at 6 mpg, so I drive this at 17mpg! One of these years I'll get my hands on a video camera and get some video clips up for everyone to see and hear...
