I saw one like that Hundai last night, but it was in a logging town, so they were all 4x4 stickers. Detroit and Eaton Locker, Warn winch, Off Road mag, K&N, etc. on a little hatch like that... Couldn't afford a truck because he bought too many stickers?

Some people actually buy a small, piece of junk commuter car and leave the good stuff at home. Somehow they think they are saving money by having an extra vehicle.

Yep, my Dodges and lowrider Cal-look Super Beetle mostly sit around gathering dust. Commuter is a 2wd 94 Ranger 2.3l/5spd, farm junker is a wrecked 92 Ranger with the same specs, full size beater is an 85 C10 short wide.

If you haven't driven in west TN you wouldn't understand. You don't take your favorite toys out on the roads during the week, they'll get destroyed. You drive an easy to replace mini truck or import car that you couldn't care less about.

At 10 MPG and $4+ a gallon, it would cost me $24 a day to drive my challenger or truck. :pale

It can definitely save money by driving the little guys to work......

That little car's expenses include the money to buy it, fuel, insurance, registration, maintenance, repairs, etc. How much fuel can you buy for the amount you spend on this extra vehicle? For some it might make sense.

True, it depends on how many miles a day traveled but you also need to consider the less maintenance required for the other vehicle. Plus the initial price of a commuter is only paid once, if it last for multiple years. I bought a cheap bike that gets 50mpg , and only cost around $2-300 a year for insurance and maintenance. Pretty good savings, and fun too!

I think the real key here is don't plaster your gas saver with hot rod decals.

Just for the sh**s & giggles factor...

69 D100 gets 8 mpg on a good day, tops out at 60 mph, costs $68 a month to insure (it's an antique), has manual 4 wheel drums and manual steering...

49 Dodge truck when last ran got 16 mpg, tops out at 50 mph (4.78:1 rear gears, 218 c.i. flathead 6, 3 speed stick), costs $200 month to insure (it's ancient), has single chamber master cylinder 4 wheel drums and manual steering and manual brakes, is almost impossible to get parts for...

94 Ranger gets 22-26 mpg, costs $100 to insure for 6 months, is capable of freeway speeds, has modern brakes (with rear ABS), was FREE, is dirt common in the junkyards (cheap replacement parts), doesn't use any oil...

I'd commute on my 75 mpg 650cc motorcycle, but the electrical system took a dump on me. $86 a YEAR to insure.
