That is awesome!!
Let us know what help you need, alot of knowledge here.

Re: New Sweptline Owner in So. Cal

Looks like the heater controls went south and the water valves were added (heater core leak?)
There is a site that you can use to decode the vin.
The plate on the driver's door pillar has all the info.
There is probably also a 'SERT' tag that lists additional options. It might be a CSS truck (extra options).
Overall a great truck. There is another swept owner in San Diego.......Tom_adc .. has a red 71 {maybe 70?}
The camper shell is a real nice touch.

Re: New Sweptline Owner in So. Cal
I have plenty of questions. I have been reading thoughout this forum for info the last couple of days. I think my first plan of action is to upgrade the breaking system. The camper shell looks good but its not my style and is probably going to go. Correct me if im wrong but it seems like my truck has the 318 Poly and a 3 speed 727 trans??
Re: New Sweptline Owner in So. Cal
318/727 should be correct. Gear ratio will be on the door tag.
If you decide to sell the shell there was a guy in the Riverside area looking for one a while back.
Just post it in the For Sale section and you can generate some funds for the brake repairs.
There is an upgrade to disc front brakes available BUT it ain't cheap AND takes some other modifications.

Id say brakes and front wheel berrings are a must. Try to convert to a dual reservoir master cylinder. There are some who can chime in on this, its a must in my eyes.

Cool truck!
I live between SD and Tuc. I have a Cummins Dodge truck and trailers. I'll be out of town 'til Aug 24 but maybe we could work something out after that. I have a friend that's going to be moving back to Tucson after a while too.

Re: New Sweptline Owner in So. Cal
That is a nice truck!! You "may" want to hold onto the Cap for a while... as you may change your mind on it. There is another post about AC aftermarket units that is real recent. Read up on that for "fun".
You could always trailer the truck home, rather than driving it. But then again, I am not familiar with your route and area as far as mountains go.
Have fun and ask away with questions. You NEVER have to wait long for an answer either!!

Looks as if it was set up to be towed behind a Motor home at some point (Note the Tow ball at the front bumper). So if you know anyone with a motor home, that might be an option as well. Other than that, you now have ONE OUTSTANDING RIG!

Re: New Sweptline Owner in So. Cal
I know a guy that did that same thing. His "front" ball was for moving a boat around so he could see better than by backing it around. That probably wouldn't be used for towing.Nytraven wrote:Looks as if it was set up to be towed behind a Motor home at some point (Note the Tow ball at the front bumper). Re: New Sweptline Owner in So. Cal
Correct, The old man used to push his boat into his side yard with that front ball set-up. This truck is so old school its cool. Its has a 70's era CB radio and electric trailer brake set up under the dash. The AC did work recently but my uncle told me that he had it converted to 134a and soon developed a leak. The compressor must have gone south because there was a new unit in the back of the truck.Jims68 wrote:I know a guy that did that same thing. My first upgrade is definatly brakes. When I drove it from Phoenix to my parents house in Tucson my Dad and I notice the there was a grinding noise coming from the right front when the brakes were applied, and a couple of times the brake pedel went to the floor. We popped off the front drums but did not see anything out of the norm other than the wierd wheel cylinder that only acts on the primary shoe (this cant be right). The only other time Ive seen a single piston wheel cylinder was on an old type 3 VW but there were two wheel cylinders per wheel, one for the primary and one for the secondary shoe.
One other thing I notice is how high the RPM's sound when on the freeway. There is no tach in the truck but at 65mph it was humming! It seemed the truck liked 65 and when I hit 70 it was screaming. I guess the truck only has three speeds. That would probably be my next upgrade if its posible.
Also I think I may have found a way to get the truck back to San Diego for cheap hopefully. Thanks for help guys. Im getting a good vibe from this forum already.

Re: New Sweptline Owner in So. Cal
Have a look at this post near the end and you will see about converting to R134a. Russ had good luck with it, but I have heard the opposite. I suppose it all depends on the quality of your unit to begin with.
As for that wheel cyl. I am not positive on the 64... but you will get some help with that from other 64 owners.
I also own a 56 DeSoto that has TWO wheel cyl. per front wheel for a total of 4!!! YES, that is correct. Maybe the 64 is similar?
You probably have a 390 rear in your truck. (not exactly sure of all the Dodge ratios) but, if your going to do lots of highway driving, they you will want to swap that out for a smaller rear. 323 is a good all around gear. The tag on your door post will tell you what gear ratio you have in the rear.
You probably have the Torqueflite transmission and they are just one of the greatest. I don't know of any torqueflite transmissions that have an overdrive either. So, you will need to change the rear to fix that to stop that highway HIGH RPM's.

Re: New Sweptline Owner in So. Cal
A little taller tires and taller rear end gears should bring the RPMs down. Pick up a cheap tach at Autozone or something.

life can be sweet sometimes. That is one cool looking ride. I think you might want to keep the camper to side, incase sometime you decide to do some retro style camping.

Re: New Sweptline Owner in So. Cal
There is an outfit called; gearvendors that makes an overdrive unit for the 727.
It is an add on, and requires shortening the driveshaft (at the least), I think the trans mount has to be moved also but I'm not sure about that.
I seem to recall it runs about $2000.oo

I can thank my uncle for this, and I can't thank him enough. I cant wait to get this thing in my garage. Like I said the camper shell is cool but not my style and I am going to sell it. Its been modded somewhat to fit the contour of the bed so I will post it for sell up here first. Cheap!duke21 wrote:life can be sweet sometimes. That is one cool looking ride. This is what the wife and I had in mind for our new/old dodge.

I have been eyeing one of these for a while and now I have the perfect truck to pull a retro travel trailer.
Here is a better pic of the camper shell.
