Wire Fire

Post by Mavis13 »

so i got a new alternater from a junk yard. well looks like he sold me the wrong one because this morning on the way to work i had a nice little wire fire. it looks as if it started from the alternater which turns out to have a internal regulater which mine is a external of course and went to the fire wall and then somewhere under the dash. im not the most happy camper right now. my big question is what do you think i fried the truck wont start i turn the key and nothing. i just dont know where to start. i really want to take the alternater and shove it in the guys butt side ways :censored :banghead

ill post some pics tommorow if thatll help

Ouch man, that's very unfortunate. 1st step would be to start taking the burned wire / harness apart and inspecting how far the damage went from the ALT and repair that. Then inspect at other locations like the starter relay, ignition switch, firewall plugs... to make sure nothing is fried / burned together. (and... be sure to get the proper alt installed).

Does the truck crank but not fire, or not even crank?

Just curious, what do you mean by it having an internal regulator? Was it a one-wire alternator? Did it have connectors to hook up your external regulator? Sorry to hear about your wiring but it sounds like it could have been worse. At least there were no flames.

Mavis,

You'll probably have it up and running, but Id be willing to help you get it running. Here's the catch though, I won't be available until the weekend of the 16th and 17th. So like I said You'll probably have it up and running again by that time.

Most likely wire from alt to alt gauge and wire
that is spliced into that alt wire to key.

10g black wire to fire wall from alt,
10g red from fire wall to gauge.
>>need to check 14g pink to switch
plus 10g red to light switch and 10g red to fuses.
these all splice into the feed from the alt.

I have had a alt (the right one) do this
once> it was shorted inside. What should have
been the 2nd field wire was grounded to the
case, like it was for the old points type
regulator. I got lucky and caught it before
the wires got compleaty fried....
