1966 Dodge NEED printed circuit board and voltage limiter

Post by Rubin »

I'm in need of a printed circuit board and voltage limiter. My fuel and temp gages don't work. Although the temp gages work every now and then. Unless there is another way to fix this problem. I would like to keep my original gages. The fuel gages did work but it don't now. I believe its burn up. So I will need a fuel gage. This is my first old truck that was running when I got it. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you Rob

Frist, be sure that is the problem.
take the sending wire off both (on the engine
near the water return hose on intake man, fuel tank
on top were the fuel line comes out)
ground them each, see if the gauge pegs of ether.
If they peg, their good and the sender is
the problem.....

Well if he told you that you need a "circuit board and voltage limiter" I am not sure that I would trust him.
He may know cars, but not the trucks, at least not
well........

There are NO circuit boards in 61 to 71 trucks :Thumbsup some of cars had them in those years, trucks
did not.
I think you should run the test I posted above.
Just make sure the key is on (engine off).

The voltage limiter is built-in the fuel gauge
on all the above years on the trucks and can
not be replaced (you can replace them on cars).
So if the limiter is bad, gauge replacement
time......

So, if your truck is one of these years (need to
know what year) we will see if we can come up
with a working fuel gauge......
square metal plate on the front gauge set
should 65 to 68.

Ye, there was.
Here is one of them.
http://members.aol.com/moparnuts/modify.htm

When the limiter goes bad- most of the time
it takes the fuel gauge and temp gauge with it......

When you have a truck fuel gauge rebuilt,
they do not include the limiter so you
must add a limiter to the system.

The truck is a 1966 Dodge D100. If you or someone could find a new fuel and temp gage I would most happy. When I found the truck in a shed. I put a dist.cap on it and drove it home. Its a short will base. Back to the gages, I noticed the problem and I thought it was in the key swicth because when I would crank the truck the 2 gages would peg out. So for some reason I wiggled the key and they would start to work properly. So I went and bought a new key switch thinking that would fix the problem, but it didn't. I wiggled the key again and thats when I seen smoke going from the front of the fuel gage. Thats why I think its burn up. I have tried to buy new gages but nobody around here can get them. It amazes me that you can buy every part to fix up a Chevy and Ford, but not a Dodge. Although I have found some parts on this web site.
Thank you Rob

I have only one spare right now (4 trucks to keep supplied) so really do not want to let it go...
I can direct you to a yard that has them, but
let's see if Terry or someone else has one(temp and fuel)....

The brand X and Y guys have it pretty easy with parts,
but then they need more new parts :joker

Fuel Guage

Post by TedWitt »

About a year ago, someone on here told me how to fix this problem at Radio Shack, but I don't remember the number to the parts, I'll see what I can come up with.

OK so here's another link to what you're talking about.

http://www.allpar.com/history/mopar/electrical2.html

This is part of the reason the older round style guages are desireable. They have an external voltage regulator that I think may still be found. They look like the rectangle one in the link above.

The internals of your fuel gauge looks like this...

and

Image

Notice the real thin heating-type-element wire that is broke. That is what these gauges do when they go bad from getting too much juice. Unfixable. The link above will show you how to circumvent the problem in the future with a new gauge.

There are places that can make gauges from your old gauges. I'll see if I can find that website. They are expensive though.

The voltage limiter on the site that Jeffc gave is what tried but you need to have a good working gauge to start with.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong about any of this.

Fuel gauge voltage regulator fix

I found a single 7805T produces too much heat. I used a 7808T feeding a 7805T, this set up drops it from 12v to 8v then from 8v to 5v splitting the heat between two units. I riveted both to a 1/8â€
