D100 Ignition and Charging system Questions.
D100 Ignition and Charging system Questions.
My 71 D100 has electronic ignition I think. This engine isn't original to the truck, it is out of a car of about 1980 to 81 vintage I believe, and the fellow I bought the truck from told me he'd set it up for electronic ignition. He used a MOPAR ignition module, or at least I think he said that. The little box I think is the module is about 3 inches by 4 inches, and has a fairly large black plug with two wires on it and a round diode looking thing. Is this the module? Could someone walk me thru a MOPAR Electronic Ignition 101 course very briefly? Once the 12V signal leaves the ignition switch, what is its' path thru module, dizzy and coil on the way to providing a timed spark at the plug? Also, I've seen an article on slant 6 forum that says a GM HEI module can be used in place of the MOPAR box. Anyone done this? What's involved? Davey

The box your talking about is the voltage regulater
(2 wires) and is not the EI control box for
the dist.
The standard Mopar system box will have 5 wires
from the plug (though the box may have ether 4 or
5 posts).
If you pull off your cap in the dist do you see
a set of points? if so you do not have a EI
system.
EI replacement systems come in a number of forms
these days, stock Mopar kits, stock use from yards and new parts from parts stores (Pertronix or build your
own).
Take a look here for basic stock systems both
alt/reg and EI.
