Last night driving home from work my lights all the sudden got REAL bright and I glanced at my voltmeter which read almost 18. Normally it wobbles between 13 and 14 and I wasn't getting heavy on the pedal or anything........thoughts?

First thing to mind when writing this was regulator....
It should be good though and this is the only time I've experienced this in over a year of running it.

It sounds like the same thing that happened to Richard Dreyfus in Close Encounters Of The Third Kind only he was driving a Ford pickup.Where there any weird lights in the sky when this happened?I'm sorry I couldn't resist, I hope you get fixed up,I would check all your connections at the regulator and the ammeter in your panel.
We had the opposite problem where the lights got real dim, the alternator was our problem. Don't know if that could be your problem. If you don't get that solved then you might get the alternator checked.
I'm pretty sure that happens to Richard Dreyfuss all the time what with his 'pixie dust' and flippin' his cars and all.
I'll double check my connections and for the time being i'll just hope it doesn;t happen again. Thanks for the suggestions all. The regulator is only a year old and the alternator just 6 months so I'm hoping that it is not either of those an just a freakish occurence.

freak thing or not , A zone use to be able to check the regularter for free , , & just food for thought , A reg can last a few years a or a few days , it;s man made

I've been through 4 alternators and three or four regulators on my 62, and still haven't been able to figure out why i am always getting dim headlights... I really need to install a voltmeter.

Try cleaning the heck out of your grounds... engine
to batterey (-), engine to firewall/voltage reg.
contact, box to frame, cab to frame, etc.. This
may help you out.
John
also run the mounting screws in and out on the headlight buckets, add a ground from the battery neg side to
core support.....
Make sure all your grounding cables are in good shape also.......
Even if power is getting to the head lights, if it
can't get back to the battery it is going to
not work right....
