Getting electricity but no crank and won't start from jumping relay.

Post by 66sportfury »

Hello all been awhile,

I was hoping to get some electrical help as my 70 w200 doesn't seem to want to start or crank. I tried jumping the relay with screwdriver but still nothing.

It has a push button to start and it's getting correct voltage to that and the starter relay. Didn't get a reading on the coil nor the resistor. Would a bad coil stop any cranking?

Coil and resistor have nothing to do with cranking. Hook a jumper cable to the big lug on the starter then jump it to the small wire on the starter. If it doesn't start cranking, get a new starter. (assuming the battery is good and well grounded to the engine block)

On certain applications, not having the starter relay ground terminal grounded will cause a no crank situation. This is most common in automatic equipped vehicles that have a faulty or disconnected neutral safety switch. The switch allows cranking only in park/neutral.

I don't think this applies to your scenario.

In standard shift trucks, the starter relay has to have a good ground through the body of the relay.

I don't know if I needed to have the key put to the on position to test the starter but without it turned on all I got was spark when trying to jump the starter.

Sounds like an internally shorted starter. Key position would be irrelevant.

Dead battery or bad connections on the big wire from battery to starter and battery to engine cable.

I took battery out of my wife's 63 fairlane and it was working fine in that. And I've scrubbed every connection I can find. I mean before new starter there was nothing now it will click so progress i guess lol

Did you jumper past the relay on the fender? I've seen batteries that you swear are good turn out to be dead.

Yes I tried that and got the same result which is weird cause that's how I started my 66 for years. Should I take off the relay and sand it clean since that's suppose to be the ground.

When you are jumping AT THE STARTER you in essence are bypassing the relay, so whether it is grounded good or not doesn't matter in this instance.

All that matters is (A) Good battery. (B) Good positive cable with good connection to the starter. (C) Good ground cable with good connection to the engine block. (D) Good starter connected securely to the engine. (E) Engine not seized nor hydrolocked. These 5 items are all that is needed to crank over the engine. Ignition key must be ON for it to fire.

Which is same thing as what PwrWgnDrvr stated.

Once you establish the means to successfully jump the starter then you can move on to the relay.

I vote for (A) Bucky.
Also, be sure the battery cables have a good connection to the battery clamp terminal. Ive seen corrosion in there that precludes the strands of the wire making a good connection to the terminal. The clamped on cable ends at the starter are sometimes loose, but that's not common.

Well I redid all the grounds and cleaned them still just a big clunk/click and I checked if it was siezed and it's not was able to turn it. So might just go get relay and resistor for the he'll of it. It all worked before winter just fine, and I even hooked up a Jumpstart to the battery thinking it just wasn't enough ummph. But no cigaro.

Its very possible the "new" starter is defective. Especially if it is a so called "rebuilt" starter. You can bench test it with jumper cables, same way as described above when in the truck.

Does the engine turn at all? Can you turn it by hand?

Yes the engine turns by over by hand, and I put a new relay on and same result still

If battery is good then it comes down to cables or starter. I wouldn't mess with relay until you get the starter to crank by jumping it. But you have already replaced the relay, so again, cables or the new starter aren't doing their job.

Can you tell by the clunk noise if possibly the starter isn't meshing with the flywheel teeth?
