Wiring Headache (with pics)

Post by WayOuttaLine »

I just got a '70 Power Wagon last weekend, and long story short the previous owner started taking the under-dash wiring out but never finished. The truck came with another harness but I don't know where they got it or what it came from, though many connections look the same.To make matters worse I don't have the instrument cluster,I found one on evilbay that will hopefully work. They labeled a few of the connectors but many were disconnected and not labeled, last night I pulled the rest of the harness out and labeled the things I disconnected on the "new" harness. I looked at a wiring diagram but there's a few I can't find on it,the pics show the ones I'm not sure about.

Get a service manual, the wiring diagrams will be invaluable.

With that said, the first set are the brake light switch.
The second pair are most likely the radio.
The orange wire in the third photo is probably the temp gauge.

The bulbs with the black wires are dash lights. You can double check that
with a ohm meter or continuity tester, they will all be connected.

The blue wire bulb is brake warning light, orange bulb is high beam, yellow left turn signal, green right signal.
If you have a oil light, instead of a gauge, it will have 2 wires - black and white.

In the 4th picture, is #1 red? it looks kinda pink. If it is red, it should be heavier and for the amp gauge.
I would trace that one, get it wrong and better have a fire extinguisher handy! But there are no pink
wires and only one red ring terminal on both my 70 dash harnesses. The red spade terminal is for the
gas gauge terminal that is attached to the bus bar. The white ring terminal grounds to the cluster case,
just above the amp gauge.

Is the final photo showing the female plug on the red wire? I can't remember on that one.
My service manual is in the crew cab.
On my 71 it is wrapped in a separate grouping with a white wire. It was too dark to trace it down.
The 71 is an automatic with A/C, but that wire is coming off the horn circuit. However, I don't think it was
used originally on my 70 crew, which was a non A/C, 4spd. That complete dash is still intact in my garage.
I labeled everything I disconnected, and it isn't labeled. Hopefully someone else will jump in here on that
one. I will try and remember to look it up and check my crew cab tomorrow, it is now using a auto, A/C harness
from a different truck, which I think is using it.

One other thing, I went and pulled the harness going to the rear of the truck today,as that was all messed up as well. The passenger side lights match the wiring diagram I have, but the driver's side is screwed up.

I know the two brown wires and the yellow would go to the connector for the tail light, but what's the extra red connector for?

That very first photo looks like the Brake power (red) and white transfers the signal to the rear, I'd have to double check that, also you can go to the local library and print out the schmatics from their Chiltons, I've done this a few times :Thumbsup

Took a look at my crew yesterday, that loose red wire in the last picture is for air conditioning.
It remains loose with no A/C. The other wires are all as I mentioned in my first post.

Possibly, but the diagram I'm using shows the rear license plate light feeding off a similar connector at the passenger side wiring.
