Spicer 60 rear disc conversion
I'm going to be redoing my rear brakes on my 71 D200 and figured since I need all new brake parts I mise well spend the money on converting to a disc brake setup and get rid of the rear drums since I'm doing the scarebird front conversion. What brackets or kits is everyone using on there conversions? Any good step by step threads showing the process?

Re: Spicer 60 rear disc conversion
Anyone successfully do this before?
Re: Spicer 60 rear disc conversion
Not on a Dana/Spicer 60 of this generation. On a late 70's axle, I used a bolt-on bracket kit off of ebay. It used either the standard 3/4 ton solid axle GM truck front caliper and rotor (which I did),or if you wanted working parking brakes the late 70's eldorado calipers. It's been a few years since I did the conversion, and the truck has been long sold, so I can't give you part numbers...

Re: Spicer 60 rear disc conversion
Problem with the rear disc conversion is parking brake. You either need to use Eldorado calipers which are kind of a PITA or run the earlier truck parking brake which goes on the trans tailshaft.

Re: Spicer 60 rear disc conversion
Yea I'm familiar with the late 70's axles being able to do disc swaps on. Everyone sells bracket kits and swaps for them. But wanted something that works on the stock 71 axle. Anyone ever look into swapping a newer dana 60 into the sweptline or the axle WMS from the 71 d200's compared to a late 70's f250 or similar?

I can't shed any light on the ford version but I swapped an 89 D250 Dana 60 into my 69. No mods had to be made at all

Re: Spicer 60 rear disc conversion
in reality, you dont need disc brakes on the rear. the fronts do 75-85% of the stopping or more. if you want to waste money just to look "cool" go right ahead, but remember, it is a waste of money

Did you have to move the leaf spring pads or shock tabs on the axle? What's the width difference?Jhollett wrote:I can't shed any light on the ford version but I swapped an 89 D250 Dana 60 into my 69. No mods had to be made at all

To each there own but yes they are worth it on a track truck. Especially for $500 or less why not.sweatybetty wrote:in reality, you dont need disc brakes on the rear. the fronts do 75-85% of the stopping or more. if you want to waste money just to look "cool" go right ahead, but remember, it is a waste of money
Re: Spicer 60 rear disc conversion
I'm just getting started my 65 W200. I ordered a universal kit. it came with GM calipers, pads, rotors, hoses, and the universal brackets. I will have to do some work to the brackets to get them to fit correctly. I'm into it for about $350 with buying the kit, new right hand thread lug studs, and wheel seals.

I have already swapped in a D60 front axle from a 79, so I will have 4 wheel discs. I planning on going to a hydro boost system, i figured the disks will be better than reducing the pressure for the old drums, which needed rebuilding.

Didn't have to modify anything. I can measure to see the difference if you would like
