Scarebird Install Tech/Advice

I only drove my truck a few months after I installed my disc brakes. I was never really impressed with the stopping power of the brakes. They worked, I just never felt like it was much of an upgrade. I put the brackets on and just assumed that was that. Now that I have the truck back apart I realized the brakes were not functioning correctly. The problem I found was that the caliper bracket was not quite wide enough for the brake pad to slide past it. After looking at the rotors I came to the conclusion that the inner pads were barely touching the rotor and not providing any stopping power. So, here is what I did to fix the problem.


Here is the area that the brake pad was hanging up on.


Here is how much pressure was being applied to the pad and causing it to bend because it would not clear the bracket.


This is the edge of the pad after I filed it to clear the caliper bracket.


This is rub mark on the caliper bracket where the brake pad was hanging up on. This is also where I filed it to clearance the pad.


These are the 2 areas that where filed both top and bottom of the bracket and pads. Now the brake pad can slide through the caliper like it is designed to do. I feel this will help the front brakes function as they should. I will have a better update when I get it on the road.

i put the rear kit on my truck and noticed a similar issue. i used an angle grinder to get some room.

brakes with disc on all four corners work really well now.

can't wait to see if you will notice a difference. i'm thinking you will.

I had read the information before installing them on my D200 and there were issues with them from all different sources. I test fit mine and had to make the modification too. I had contacted Scarebird and they recommended grinding down the edges on the pads just as you did. Of course they recommended doing just the pads and not their brackets. I did that and it's been working fine at this point. I'm sure that all the Scarebird installs have this issue.

Thanks for the info slick!!! I installed disc'c up front but have yet to test drive my truck yet. I also had some fittment issues, I thought it might of been because I put the brackets on the wrong side. Scarebird rep told me they will work both ways depending on your pad thickness. Their directions say one way but the pictures has it installed differently. Can you tell me which side of the scarebird plate you have the projected (welded) threaded nut facing? Does it look like the picture or is yours opposite?

Hey Buster, I don't think it matters, but I think I put mine so the welded side on the backside facing the inside of the truck. I will try to remember to look tomorrow.
