1968 d-100 brake, engine, manual steering, everything help

Post by moparman13 »

hey guys. new to the site. i have a 1968 d-100 adventurer that is in desperate need of brake job. i can not find brake drums at all for my truck, i cannot find a suitable replacement for the steering box for the thruck. i am also in desperate need for cheap front suspension replacement for my truck. ive had this truck for 3 years and never drivin it, and i am very very sadened to see suck a beautiful truck sitting in a drive way. soo much work for a 16 year old, but so far ive done all the work myself. if anyone has any info that can help, i have millions of questions, and i would love the answers. i would love to show pictures, but i am very new the website. thank all of you that keep these beasts on the road, and thank you all who can help me.

Currently doing a complete brake overhaul for my D100. What exactly do you need done with the brakes?

I find that between NAPA and Autozone, I can find pretty much anything for the brakes, even drums.

I never found drums either, my 68 D100 drums were trashed so I had to find a good used set and got them turned.

I couldn't find the right brake hoses so I had to use brass adapters to up the thread size.

I havent tried to find a steering box yet....

master cylinders and wheel cylinders are easy to find. :study

For the steering issues, you can try to adjust the gear box but past experience leads me to say waste of time. Scott "HellBelly" may have steering gearbox to sell you. Or you can spend the money for a solid reman steering gear at http://www.steerandgear.com, which is what I did. I replaced nearly every piece of my brake system last year. I pulled the old pipes out and used them as patterns to bend/form the new one's. I also had to use a few adapters for sizing but most all not having any dripping brake fluid or kinked hoses/pipes is key. I looked up your city, Valley, Ne. You should have plenty of spring and axle shops near you. You can have your springs re-built. Not to sound silly, but I try to make local friends/contacts to help out on my projects. well the drums for all four brakes is impossible to find, litteraly. weve gone to napa, auto zone, car quest, o'riellys, hollinder, year one. im really just thinking of getting a whole new rearend for the truck its that bad. i would like to know a very cheap suitable replacement. also the front suspension is sooo hard when you turn it, i either need a new front suspension or i need to find cheap ways of tweeking it for driving. bushings btw for door, SO HARD TO FIND!!. im just in such a rut right now. my truck is just dying slowly and i cant really do anything with it. i put some cheap headers on it, but had to cut the frame were it arches away to accomidate the headers, and was forced to go with the exhaust manifolds instead so not im stuck with exposed areas on the frame im honestly to the point of selling this truck to but a 71 dude, but noone would buy it any suggestions???????

You have two choices as I see it. Plan "A" is to attack one single issue at a time going for the safety items first, i.e., brakes, steering... then to "function" items, and cosmetics last. Plan "B" sadly is to cut your losses and quit. Sell the truck or use it for a parts vehicle on another project. I got my truck May 1985 from my grandparents. My '67 D200 CamperSpecial was on blocks for 8 years until I discovered this internet thing. I couldn't find brake drums. THEN came the internet and I began searching for parts. Today my grandparents 1967 D200 Camper Special (known around my house as 'ol Dodger) is a daily driver again. I still haven't done anything cosmetic and have the usual rust holes that Sweptlines are so well known for but mechanically my 383/727/4.10AS drive train will out drag (race) nearly all the newer trucks on the road, stop light to stop light. Remember that not many great works of art happen over night. John, Tyler, TX
