Driver side front lug bolts reverse thread.......Why?
Driver side front lug bolts reverse thread.......Why?
I found this out the hard way. Broke off a stud trying to get the 'frozen' lug nut off. Anyone know why the drivers front wheel has these?
-Thanks!-

Because that's what Chrysler did for many years. Been debated endlessly and the best thing to do is change the front and rear hubs over to right hand thread. The left hand studs usually have an L on the end of stud.

Wait, the driver side rear is reverse thread too?
I had new studs pressed into the drum.......normal thread.

Chrysler used left handed threads on drivers side in the 60's because of the rotation of the wheel. They thought maybe centrifugal force could loosen the lugs spinning in the opposite direction.

The LH thread thing went back into at least the 1940's, maybe before

And to make it even more confusing. I had a 71 W200 that had the left hand front drum on the right side when I got the truck. It was criss crossed with lefty's.

I remember seeing an L stamped on the end of the stud so you would "see" it had left handed threads. Other automakers also used Left hand threaded studs too, but I can't recall which ones now.

Nash had LH threads for many years, until the 1954 merger with Hudson. The 1961 - 1963 GM "small" cars (Chevy Corvair, Buick Skylark, Olds Cutlass, and Pontiac LeMans) are all 5-on-4-1/2" bolt pattern and all have LH thread on the driver side. Also, there are many foreign makes that had the LH threads.

Except 3 of those had a 4 on 4.5" lug pattern.66patrick wrote: The 1961 - 1963 GM "small" cars (Chevy Corvair, Buick Skylark, Olds Cutlass, and Pontiac LeMans) are all 5-on-4-1/2" bolt pattern and all have LH thread on the driver side.

All were 5-lug, but you might be right on the Corvair..,I've owned a '62 Skylark and a '62 LeMans, and know these two for certain.

My 1975 W600 (and 1965 W500) has LH thread on driver's side. Rockwell axles.

The Corvair, F85(Cutlass) and the Buick Skylark all had a 4 on 4.5" wheel lug pattern during 61-63. The Pontiac Tempest(Lemans) had the 5 on 4.5" pattern. Someone may have swapped your Skylark hubs and drums for Pontiac pieces.66patrick wrote:All were 5-lug, but you might be right on the Corvair..,I've owned a '62 Skylark and a '62 LeMans, and know these two for certain.
