wheel cylinder suggestions

Post by facechicken »

Well my passenger side wheel chlinder is leaking in the front wheel I am gonna rebuild the entire brake system. Gonna stay with the drums anyways. Any got any recommendations for a good cheap replacement. I am gonna rebuild every wheel eventually and need an idea of total expense.

Depending on the year of your truck, rear brake drums can
be a bit scarce. If your current drums can be turned smooth,
you can save some good coin right there. If you need drums, the
fronts were the same from '59 through '71 and would likely cost
about $55-$70 each. The rear ['65-'69 :thinking ] are tough to
find. If you have access to a '70 or '71 parts donor, I'd suggest
snagging the backing plates and going with them as the drums
are easier to find and a bit cheaper [$45-$60-ish].

Hard lines & fittings - $75-$110 [based on a roll of line. You cut & double flare]
Shoes [per set] - $24-$32 [Parts store might charge a core :thinking ]
Spring/Hold-Down/Adjuster kit [per set] $18-$24 [x4]
Master Cylinder - $45-$60
Hoses [front] - $15 each
Hose [rear] - $20
Wheel cylinders - $12-$18 [x4]

These are close approximations. :study :2cents

I just did mine and spent about $1000 for everything except front drums (mine were good) and hard lines. Including wheel bearings on both ends and including rebuilding the booster and a new master.

New master, $16 plus core. New drums $48 each rear, $79 each front. Soft lines $12 each. Wheel cyclinders $9 each. Pre-fab hard line sections roughy $69. Shoes $16 rear, $20 front, no core either end. Rear axle seals and bearings $35, having them replaced because the dip :censored installer didn't know the bearings took grease instead of gear oil? About $1300.

Prices as of Mar 2011 Seattle area and middle of nowhere Utah.
