airbags on front axle

Post by dakotadave »

i thought i saw this somewhere on this site but i cant find it. not looking to lay frame or do anything exciting but would like airbags on the front and rear stock axles.

my original leafs are getting a little long in the tooth and are uneven at this point. i have resisted pulling leafs out and dropping the truck for 14 years but i think it may not be a bad idea anymore, just a little drop around 2 or 3 inches total (so, i'm thinking remove enough leafs to drop it 5 inches and then bring it back up with air bags?). not looking to do extensive mods or turn heads. just level out the truck and have the ability to lower the ride height.

its a 69 3/4 ton, and my rear axle housing is also bent. not sure what to do about that :thinking

I have bags on the back of my W and intend to someday do the front. Takes a little work to do it but not too bad. I would do it a bit differently if I were doing it again but I am pretty happy overall with them. I don't know about where you are at but there are several places around here that can straighten axles. I had to have mine done after welding on it. For what it's worth it is almost impossible to weld on an axle and NOT have to have it straightened. This comes from Rod @ Axlemasters in Clackamas, OR.

from what i can tel the bags and hardware should fit up there ok (?) although i think on the 2wd they shocks may or may not need moved. i need to take another look but i dont think there is much other interference except or maybe the fender shield and some small accessories.

edit - i just went and looked. it looks more complex than i thought; it seems the brake lines, sway bar, steering knuckle and shocks are all competing for real estate in the area where the bags would go.

This is how I was going to do mine. Never tested on the road because I decided to lift it instead. I think it would work though..viewtopic.php?f=20&t=13477&p=91269#p91269

i saw that slick, and i think it might be workable with the shocks (maybe). the steering knuckle looks problematic as well.

i even went to the air ride site but i couldnt find the specific setup you used. do you remember any more about it?

i've had the truck since 1996 and it was my daily driver until 4 years ago. now i havent driven it in 4 years. it needs help soon.

Dave--

If you only want to drop it 2-3" de-arching the springs can do that for you, and if you take out the rubber bump stops you won't need bagging.

Best of luck,

Only store bought item I used was some bag over leaf brackets and some bag circles that I welded to the frame. http://www.ridetech.com/store/suspensio ... acket.html Tons of bracket options.. http://www.ridetech.com/store/suspensio ... -brackets/
