New Shocks

Post by Ranchols »

I have some sagging leaf springs, so I decided to try this as a cheaper alternative to buying new leaf springs!

Monroe coil over shocks. I used the same part number that is listed for the rear on the front as well. I have about an 1/8" clearance between the frame and coil.

I got them at http://www.autobarn.com for $145 and free shipping!

My auto parts stores around here are telling me that is the only shock anyone makes that will fit my 69 PW CC. I have'nt tried the them yet, What do you think about them. Are these the ones that have 60 lbs springs?

Factory lenght front shocks were not long enough with the 92' dana 60, springs. & shackles that I installed.
I had a horible time finding front shocks that would provide proper travel. 11/16 loops on both ends really goof up options. Napa found me front shocks from 93-97 Ford Superduty -not Fseries, trucks that have ample travel. Its a good heavy duty shock that should hold up.

I'm not much of a Rancho fan, my experance with their products has always ended up with me being unhappy about their product or fitment.
Let us know about those helper shocks.

Ranchero also makes shocks that fit our trucks, if your also lookin for another shock. To get the springs re-arched should cost $250.00

Make sure and get the extended and compressed lengths on the new shocks and then measure yours.

The ones Rancho claim fit my 70 W200 crew were too short for the rear. Luckily I was able to design
the new staggered rear shock system to work with them. I did a lot of searching after I found out the
Ranchos were to short. I was unable to find any readily available, and reasonably priced shocks that
were an acceptable length and proper eyelets.

I know thier is alot of problems with the service at parts stores, but I got Ranchero 5000 all the way around and they fit right the first time, and I couldn't have been happier with the results, just like you'll be with those coil over shocks, you should be able to push your truck throught the turns and enjoy the response :Thumbsup

Guys-

So far so good! The truck rides real nice. Still feels like a 3/4 Ton truck should, but these are really eating up most of the big bumps better than the old worn standards!

The part number I used is Monroe 58484. They are for 2wd, and are listed for 1967, but they obviously fit earlier years!

cool. :salut i think the only thing i worry about is that theyd put more load on the shock mounts themselves rather than the leaf springs.... anybody see a problem there or is it not enough to cause harm? :thinking

On some trucks that is a problem, but on our trucks (my opinion) the shock mounts are very strong, should hold up fine. Growing up my dad had a camper special with air shock that he used for leveling a huge heavy camper and any time we were not camping we were hauling way to much green fire wood. He never had a problem. (His problem was stopping the truck) I'm not a fan of air shocks or helper springs on shocks but I'm all out of money and I have to buy new springs later. I'll probaly be trying the Monroe's also.

You can also pull your leafs and have them rearched. Not hard to do, and relatively inexpensive. When I restore a vehicle I have them tested, magnufluxed, rearched and new pin and bushings.

I do alot of Model A stuff and rearch everything. My buddy owns a chassis shop and I use his machine. Takes about 15 minutes.

I stuck $17 Gabriels on mine and it rides like a dream.

Now wonder I was bouncing through intersections, I think it still had the originals. :pale
