Engine turns over BUT

Engine turns over but seems to get hung up a bit. Wondering ideas of what to look for. Pulled plugs, turns over nice until it hits a spot and takes a bit extra to get passed this spot but does. Would a sticky valve or push rod do this?

Is this a new issue from a running engine? Are you turning it over by hand (via breaker bar on dampener bolt) or with the starter when you state it turns nicely?

No way a valve would do that. I had a 318 in a 64 a few yrs ago that did that. It was a rod bearing that had spun and one half would slip behind the other causing it to wedge up and jam the rotation.

Just got the truck, was told it would run - which means nothing - plugs out, turning via fan. Starter turns it over no issue without plugs, with plugs seemed to struggle. The rod bearing sounds possible.

Still could be starter related. Bad cables/connections. Poor starter. Battery weak maybe. What starter does it have. Automatic with gear reduction or standard with direct drive. Year specific for direct drive. :thinking :thinking

Direct drive, starter looks newer, running straight off a boost pack as battery was completely toast.
1967 fargo - 318 poly.

Doesn't discount it being faulty under load. :thinking :thinking

Rotate the engine by hand using a breaker bar and socket on the vibration damper bolt, plugs out. If you don't fell the spot that hangs up, then its probably the starter.
Get a good battery and try that first. You'll need one eventually anyway. If not, borrow one from your other vehicle. Remove the bad battery as it is a drain on your boost pack or jumper cables.

Has tight spots doing it by hand, no plugs. If it is a spun bearing, think I could get away with just doing bearings and seals - rebuild engine at a later date - to get it running, or would this cause more damage to the crank...
Thoughts??

its tight only hope you might have is rust or loose carbon in the cylinders
if its a spun bearing your looking at crank and rods
good luck
