Not a big fan of the column shift in the relatively tight cab of my '65, so I understand.

The A833 4 speed should definitely handle that level of power. There was even an overdrive version used in the trucks.

The A833 4 speed will not work with your Hydro. set up. The 10 spline NP435 would be a direct fit. Do you have the e brake on your existing A745 3 speed?

You can put in an A833 OD trans but will need all the accompanying mechanical bell housing parts, Flywheel etc to install trans into a 68 and earlier. Manufacture a bracket to use Hydraulic slave and a trans crossmember.
Existing crossmember for hydraulic bellhousing mounts may have to be cut out for clearance.

Brewer's is a great source for anything A833. Very helpful.
As the others have mentioned, it's not easy, but it is doable.
