Shift Cane Kyphosis

I have two shift canes from two transmissions. The one at the top is a '69. The one at the bottom is a '68. From my recollection, I'm thinking I'd prefer to use the '69 as it's a bit higher up and closer to the wheel, but I don't know if there are any differences in the dash that would preclude that, such as the pull-cables for the heater... or something. Does anyone have experience with swapping such?

It doesn't take more than 30 seconds to pop them in and out, so try them both and see if it works. Sorta like trying on shoes at the shoe store.

You must have stronger thumbs than I do. I used to push that lock ring down with two thumbs. When I did my clutch that spring under it seemed a whole lot stronger than it did 20 years ago

If there is an easier way I would love to hear it.

I use a large set of channel locks, opened up and set on the top edge of the ring, then push down on the side of the pliers while rotating the ring with the pliers.

The reason I asked is that I want to sell I'the '69 transmission. I'm not one to sell it without a cane in it. So I want to be able to know which cane I'm keeping. Capiche?

Continuing with Terry's shoe theme..... I'd keep the straighter handle.
It looks to have more "sole" left on the transmission end.

I put the same shifter in my 68 w200. In first gear it's a little close to steering wheel. Mine came from a 72 w200 and I had to use it transmission cover as well for it to work .send me a PM and I can send u pictures
Thanks

Many thanks to MikeM for photos.
He just about solved the questions with these photos of a later model cane in a '68 truck.
I'll use the '69 and bend it just a few inches further to the right.
Now I can bend, blast, paint, and stow so that they're safe and out of the way.
