Tapered Axle to Flanged Axle Swap...Simple or Complicated?

Post by Snowdog »

I have a chance to swap out my damaged tapered axle/rearend for a newer, flanged unit.

Is it a simple swap, or are the spring locations, etc, different?

Thank you for any help.

All spring perch spacing is the same right up to 1993 Dodge 150 series (1/2 ton trucks and Ramchargers). So continue on with upgrade. You might have to use an adapter u joint. :thinking :thinking :thinking :thinking From 1986 ish and up Bolt pattern was standardized to 5 on 5 1/2. W Series from 69 to 74 also were 5 on 5 1/2. D series from 1965 to 1985 were 5 on 4 1/2. Think I have that right. :thinking :thinking
My truck is younger than me.

Grateful for the advice. The axle is coming from a '68. Wish me luck :)

That will also give you decent parking brakes. Get the cables, brackets, levers, etc from the 68!

Terry's is a good thought on the e-brake.
If this axle was off a D200 or W200 that would be a 10-spline Dana 60.
It is possible you may need to deal with a difference in drive shaft length if you are going to a heavier axle.
If so, this is a good time to consider upgrading the yoke and u-joint to match.
What size engine and axle is this? What model truck?
In general, it is inadvisable to reuse the U-bolts over the springs.
If these are 9/16, the cost of going to 5/8 is minimal.
Betts Springs can make any U-bolt you want and have it out the same day for a very reasonable price.

Thanks for the help, too.

The donor is a D100. Many things to consider. Thanks :)
