What Flywheel

Post by DapperDaz »

I am Having a problem finding the right flywheel that works with this NP4530 transmission i am told its the same as a NP445 its just named differently and a 318 poly engine.

The dilemma i am having is that i used the smaller size 10 1/2 inch clutch flywheel and its too small as it sits too far way from the starter. I then tried the 11 inch clutch flywheel and it will not slide into the bell housing of the transmission. I am at a loss right now to know where else to look i have searched online but to no avail.

Am i missing something or a trick here to get these two to marry together.

Just dawned on me the truck is a 1975 D100 and i have been searching for the flywheel for that year which is where i am probably going wrong. Can anyone help and let me know what year these trannys would be used between so i can find a flywheel that was used in those years instead. Or guide me to the right flywheel thanks

What bell are u using? U need the flywheel and starter that go with the bell. Everything else has to match those 3.

To confirm..... You're trying to install the transmission in a 1975 D100? :thinking

That is NOT a NP445!!!
I have 3 of them and they are not cast that way. The bell is separate.

PwrWgnDrvr is correct.

I have an NP4530 in my garage and it's not cast with bell, the bell is a separate part.

Sorry for the confusion guys I’m a novice obviously. The issue I’m having is when i try to mate the tranny and the engine together the flywheel is with too big and will not allow the tranny to slide up against the engine or when i use the other flywheel its too small for the starter to catch the teeth of the flywheel.

I am trying to find out what flywheel is used with the NP4530 tranny and a 318 poly engine.

Please help guys I’m lost

Probably best to post up pics of the truck, the bell, the Poly and the flywheels.
You might not get too far otherwise.... :2cents

Pics are difficult for me to see, but I do see that the engine is NOT a poly 318!
What is that engine really and what did it come out of?
What did the 4530 come out of?
You may be trying to mate a dog to a cat - won't work......

To further Terry's points.....
Make certain that you do have a LA318. The LA360
looks the same, but uses a balanced flywheel.

Also, is there a part number on that bell housing?
That would help to be able to look it up to see the
specific applications.

Does that NP4530 have a 23 spline input shaft or
is it 10 spline? :thinking I can't see well enough
to confirm from your pic.

Here is a photo of the engine casting number 4104230-318-14 hopefully this will shed some light on the matter

The input shaft has 23 splines

Ok, its a 318. That doesn't mean *#%^ for what you're asking. As I said to start with - the flywheel and starter HAVE TO MATCH THE BELL!!! Regardless if the bell is integral or separate from the tranny. So if you really want to know "What Flywheel", get it from whatever that tranny was attached to! You haven't answered the question above - WTF did u get that tranny?

In re-reading your second post on the 12th, I'm trying to figure out what the
truck is, exactly, that you're working on. :thinking Are you trying to put this
'75 D100 back together or is there another [Sweptline :thinking ] truck involved
here?

Sounds like you have NP445...........if so? your going to need a bell housing and flywheel for a 69-up small block.
I can tell you this, that bell housing is nothing I've ever seen for a 69-71 Dodge truck small block. I think you need to do some research on that bell housing.
I've never seen one with that square inspection hole on the top...........Just as point of interest, that bell housing unbolts from the tranny, it's not one piece as you mentioned.
