Push button stuck in "D"

Good morning all.
I need some help. My 64 D-100 Poly and push button auto is stuck in "D". I banged on the box to try and jar it loose but it will not go in either R or N. Suggestions before I try and find an old timer at one of the local Tranny shops?
Thanks
Thomas

Seems like something you could reach over the lip of the trans and try to move the linkage by hand. Although my setup is entirely different, I bet its binding inside the cable. I followed this for troubleshooting on mine:

Thanks Conrad alas I have the old style Tranny and the cable goes into to the transmission for gear changes. I think it is in the little box and before I tear into it I would appreciate some more guidance as it looks pretty confusing from the pics I have seen on line.

Even though this shifter is different, the inside is similar.

I took pictures of one, but the pictures are too small to see much detail.

does the manual show a way to lubricate the cables and button box?

Those aren't too hard to access. Take the face plate off, then the housing. The works should stay put. Clean, lube, poke around and you can see how it works. You might find a broken spring in there. Try the N button while helping the cable to move. Cleaning the one out on my 62 made a world of difference. Does yours have a Park position? the 62 does not. Play with it.

Thanks all. I am going to open her up tomorrow. Mine is the standard truck version in the protruding box left of the steering column. I figure that just a cleaning should be what she needs. [img][img]

Good news... the problem is not in the box part of the shifter and all the pieces are now shinny and washed..... the bad news, the problem is behind the dash and short of tearing out the most of the interior I can't get my fat shoulders under the dash to get a good look... darn. I need to find an exploded view of the assembly before I push her out the single car garage so I can get at everything. I am still thinking of having her towed to an older timer tranny guy in town... Does anyone have a line on a good shifter assembly just in case?

When I work under the dash I've found taking 15-20 minutes to remove the bench seat really helps open up space and you
make up that lost time while working under the dash.
