302 heads, or Magnum?

alright guys, which is the better idea.

have a '66 d100 that has a 318 LA series from the previous owner. so far have an edelbrock 600cfm carb, headers, and now looking to dive a little deeper into making this thing go. the wife cleared me to spend a little money, so is it better to get some Magnum or the 302 series heads?

Once I get the heads, I will also be doing a cam replacement. the truck is a 2wd long bed 3 speed auto right now. after the engine I will work towards the differential gears.

my plan is to have a truck that is drivable on the streets, but everyone wants to throw some smoke from the tires every now and then.

Hey Naloleal,

I have a 68' with the 318 and found cracks in a head. I got a set of 302 heads from Sunwest Automotive Engine in Medical Lake, WA. They swapped out my old head as core and the price was about $280 when all was done. I did some light blending at the intake to heads and heads to exhaust. Stock 2 barrel intake and stock exhaust. I did go with duel exhaust and free flow mufflers. Now the truck will spin the single back tire(3.91 in a 741 rear) and second gear scratch if I get on it. The low end torque is great. Haven't tested MPG yet.

Let me know if you pass through Chelan so we can compare notes. I would like to see how well your headers fit.

Keep us posted,
Jimharold

Jim,
I was having issues finding the 302 heads until I came across then earlier today. Which is great, because I'm in Cheney (about 20 minutes from Medical Lake).

So I take it you found the heads worth the money?

And did you say they did the swap for you?

Naloleal,

Yes, I like the heads and you get hardened valve seats at the same time. I don't think bigger valves would cost to much. It maybe worth checking that out since you also want a bigger cam. Some of the guys here know good combinations for a great 318. I installed the heads myself. After porting I also cleaned up the castings for smooth oil return. I like the easy install without hunting for Magnum parts.

Talk at you later,
