Slant 6 Belt alignment

Post by lunacy »

The alternator on my 65 slant 6 seems to be mounted back a bit, the belt going to it is obviously at an angle, it has jumped once so far. It also looks like the water pump pulley is slightly out from the crank pulley. The brackets don't look like they have much adjustment other than bending the long alternator bracket. Also, this motor has a two groove crank pulley, only outer groove is being used. Not sure if anyone can tell me if I have the wrong pulleys or if that's how these are and I have to bend it and make it work.

I'd just replace the alternator pulley with a double groove pulley and use the outside groove.

Looks like a later model year motor probably need to go to junk yard to find one thats all there and rob the parts you need should have a single pulley on the crank but might have to rob the the patts from a double pulley crank engine

Ok, browsing through some pictures there were lots of different belt configurations for these slant 6 motors. Sounds like best bet would be to find a complete, good setup and replace them all rather than hunting for one that would make the others line up.

Thanks for the help, I guess I need to run the numbers on this motor, I thought it was the original, I guess pulleys might have been changed at some point.
