Hi guys I need to replace my 318 poly in my 63 dodge 440, the engine that I have just pulled out is the original engine, I have another 318 poly to put put back in and noticed that the back of the block appeared different. The original block the bosses are under the circle where the bell housing meets and the replacement engine the bosses are above the circle, now I havn`t mated anything together yet as I am just sorting out the bits at the moment.
Are these compatable? now I was told that my replacement is a 63 block and both had automatic transmissions.
63 poly bolt pattern
Re: 63 poly bolt pattern
Sir
The easy way to find out what year you have is to look on The Front Left of The Block just below The Head Gasket
( Starter Motor side ).
The older engine designs use a Cast Iron Bell Housing with all Automatic's.
The older engine designs use a Engine to a Cast Iron Bell Housing "Locating Pin" that is in a different location than
one piece Alum Bell Housing/ Transmission Case.
The Cast Iron Automatic Transmission Design uses a Crank Shaft that Extends father to the rear with more mounting
bolts on The Crank shaft Flange.
It has been some years since 1963 and there may have been a "replacement" involved or because the car - engine year
combo may be different because it is a "Export".
The Oil Pan Sump needs to be to be in The Cars Space. Like Water Pumps, Heads, Exhaust Manifolds and etc these
bolt to either engine.
Yahoo Groups has an Poly Site that has a lot of "Car Information" ( even though Truck Driver's are there too ).

Re: 63 poly bolt pattern
I dug out an old 313 truck block and it has the same bolt pattern as the replacement block if this helps.

Re: 63 poly bolt pattern
The 313 seems to be mainly an export engine and production started in the late 50s, but I don't know if they made changes over the years. On the American versions of the 318, pre-62 engines used a different transmission than 62-66 engines.
I haven't seen you post in years.
