Pertronix ?
I hope I spelled it correctly...Has anyone had any experience with installing Pertronix equipment (distributor swap) on their sweptline?

Re: Pertronix ?
I put Pertronix on my 64 D100 big block that used a dual point distributor. Very easy to set up and use. I like it quite a bit.
I would suggest getting an electronic voltage regulator if you go electronic ignition as well. You'll have fewer gremlins to work on.

I have a Pertronix. Re: (Dood) 1968 D200 Camper Special
The install guide is OK: the pictures stink but the written instructions are great. You'll need to wire up a pigtail to power it. Like Ben suggests, I have an electronic regulator. Regardless of ignition, there is just no good reason (I'm aware of) to have a mechanical one these days anyway.
If I recall correctly, there is something in the instructions about the ballast resistor like: if you have one, leave it.

I have one on my Studebaker firing a Bosch Supercoil. Easy and painless installation, no noticeable performance changes though. Not tracking down a points set every 10,000 is the bonus.

Re: Pertronix ?
Put one in my 66 w/360 about 12 years ago. Still working fine. Used a Mopar setup for my 63 Dart /6. It's still working also. Either one works well from my experience. Good luck! Mike

Re: Pertronix ?
As I have read I believe the ballast resistor is to protect the factory type coil from getting full voltage. If you go with an aftermarket type "performance" coil you will not need the ballast resistor. Just saying, while you are doing the ignition conversion.
Re: Pertronix ?
The Mopar electronic ignition is THE BEST distributor style ignition system there is. If I could get a Chevy distributor to take the Mopar reluctor and sensor coil I'd do it in a minute. Just carry one spare sensor and ignition box and a spare resistor at all times. Or a complete spare distributor, then it's a five minute fix.
Aftermarket setups mean that if you break down you're stuck unless you buy a whole complete factory or other aftermarket setup if you are away from home.
Ask me how I know this.....

i agree about the Mopar box being the best.rogerr wrote:The Mopar electronic ignition is THE BEST distributor style ignition system there is. unfortunately running a mopar box is not always a option - for example i wanted to run the original style dual point distributor that came in my truck but did not want the hassle of points.
the pertronix is a great option.
as a backup i wired a Mopar box and distributor to take the place of the Pertronix in case of failure. this config came in handy on the Hot Rod Power Tour when i had problem with the cap and rotor on my dual point distributor. i swapped the distributors, plugged in my hidden Mopar box, set the timing and was back on the road.

Re: Pertronix ?
My Pertronix unit just replaced the points plate so I carry the original points plate as a spare. 5 min job to replace the points. Not a bit of problems for over 10 years on the truck and 8 years on the Dart even though I carry spare parts. Of course if I didn't have spare parts it would probably break down, right?
Like the only time you need a spare is when you don't have one! Mike
