nitros on a poly??

Post by wideblock »

started gathering bits and pieces for my stroker poly build up and i have been tossing the idea around of a 125hp nitros shot just to make things more fun. have any of you guys done this, or seen it done in the past? im already familiar with what needs to be done to make the motor handle the nitros, im just curious if theres any other out there that have done it. the thought of 400+hp with an extra 125hp at the touch of a button just sounds like my kind of fun!! 8)

Nitros

Post by MountainMoparRobin »

Trey,
I've never considered the extra boost, mainly because of my stubborness to keep things natural, I've never been a fan of the added gadiches to pull out a victory from a loss, but, I after riding in a car with nitros and feeling it, may change my mind.

i used to see it as you, naturally aspirated or nothing! but i too was privlede to ride in a nitros charged 69 gtx 440. the car was wicked fast, and when he flipped that switch, it was down right scary. im sure running 400+hp i wouldnt have the need for the nitros much, but i would like the bragging right of a 600hp 318.

Nitrous sounds real sweet, but my only concern is safety. Can the trucks suspension and steering handle the speed?

Handle

Post by MountainMoparRobin »

Scott,
The suspension if maintained properly can see the same speeds of a car, I've had mine over 100 mph and it criuzed nicely, and that was before the gear box was rebuilt, but after good kingpins and tyrod ends!

Mine's been up to 100 several times, and as long as you don't have to stop it real quick and throw all that extra force on the front end, it handles well... and all of my front end are the same original pieces from the factory. Just don't forget to plan ahead with that much speed.....

You get it up around 100, see that big ole steering wheel and the "trusty" lap belt and imagine how many teeth you'll be swapping with the steering wheel if something goes wrong (I'm gonna pass on any old timers "gummer" jokes for now.. LOL). I've slid out of control in that truck a number of times... fish-tailed and took out 2 trees and a barb wire fence doing about 40... since then I have been a little more cautious with what's coming up on the road.
Thanks, Clint

try 125fmph!!!! the front end gets light around 110 and that big ole wheel in front of you seems useless. then you start thinking of what would happen if someone pulled in front of you??? man could this hunk of steel do some damage at that speed. then you realize, your truck did come with seat belts, and you could wind up looking like a cored apple on the steering wheel. about that time you hang on a few more seconds to proove you aint scared and let off. then you spend the next 20 minutes shaking from all the adrenaline you just put in your system and have perma grin for the rest of the day.

Sounds about right.... that's the only time I wish I had something lower than 3.23.... I can't push it past 100. You're right on about the grin lasting all day though

Clint, you should be able to run over 100 mph with your 3;23 I have the 3.5 & can bure the needle plus , don't like keeping it there for long , cause no matter what brakes you have at that speed , if trouble pulls out in front of you , just say good night

My original '66 had one of those loose nuts and someone mentioned something about some lost marbles,... It broke triple digits a few times, it was definately a rush, until that last ride. i was only doing about 85 when the semi jumped out in front of me. That's why I had to find a replacement Dodge!

on the subject of brakes, dosnt the barn door aerodynamics kinda like pulling the chute when you let off? I know mine do! Both the greenbean and the driver have seen 100+ on a few occasions, the bean did it witha strong 318 and a 4.10 dana!

Once when driving my 66 after a R&P swap in the 8 3/4 (put in a 2.73 posi), I decided to see what it could do. On a nice stretch of empty back road I hit it. At about 3800 I buried the speedo,... in second gear! The scary part wasn't that the nose was still up or it was still holding me in my seat, but that the 31x10.50 all terrains get kinda square about then. :pale

I decided about then that I learned enough and backed down at about 120 I'd guess. I'd need more room and some speed rated tires to completely wind 'er out. Maybe someday. :)
