4 Speed Bellhousing removal

Post by wayneswirld2 »

OK y'all, I'm in a bit of a quandary. I need to remove the bell housing from my 1965 Slant 6 motor, but the motor is frozen. I've removed THREE outer bolts that hold the bell housing to the back of the engine but the housing won't budge. Are there possibly TWO more that are hidden, possibly BEHIND the flywheel? If so, I'm kinda screwed I think, since the motor is locked up. Can't get the flywheel to turn to remove the pressure plate bolts so that I can access the flywheel bolts....you see where this is going.

Any ideas? :thinking

If I remember there is at least one bolt on the inside. Wow, yeah is there any way to free up the engine? Is the engine done for?

Motor is done for, not saving anything but oil pan, bell housing, clutch and flywheel.

I imagine you could go in from the bottom and cut the crank shaft with a torch or angle grinder? Maybe have a hose or fire extinguiser handy. I dont know, break the block apart with a big hammer?
Good luck and have fun.

Fun? Not likely! I think I will pull the pan this afternoon and see if I can free up the motor...UPDATE: Pulled the pan. Found pistons in cylinders 5 and 6 welded to the cylinder walls. Had to practically remove the crank with the flywheel attached, well HALF remove anyway, to access the bolts. :clap

By the way, there are THREE bolts for the bell housing that are behind the flywheel...for anyone's future reference. Now, onward and upward...time to mount the bell housing on the new engine and get it installed this week. :salut

The bolts are inside the bell for the slant six set up.
Good to hear that you are making progress.

Thanks Jim. Definately making progress now. Have the bell housing, flywheel, and clutch assembly installed on the new motor. Can't say that I'm impressed at the design though. The engineers didn't think this one out well enough. :thinking

All that is left before I can install the motor is to swap oil pans and pick-up tube, and remove the aluminum plug on the new motor where the dipstick tube will go. Not really looking forward to THAT little bit of fun at all, haven't figured out exactly how I'm going to do it yet. It may just need to be tapped out from the inside, I dunno yet. :banghead
