Trying to set my timing and cant get to 5 degrees close as I can get is 10 then the vac advance hits the fire wall. Any ideas?

It isn't uncommon for the outer ring of the vibration dampenerprosparky475 wrote:Trying to set my timing and cant get to 5 degrees close as I can get is 10 then the vac advance hits the fire wall. Any ideas?
to "slip" out of position over the decades. You might try finding
TDC on cylinder #1, painting a new mark on your dampener and
re-timing the engine. Also, you can time it by vacuum [max.
value] @ idle. Are you sure your timing chain is in good shape?

Re: help setting timing
No idea. I just got the truck 4 weeks ago and I can not keep up with the repairs! every time I start it something else breaks
the problem started with when driving truck runs fine at idle and slow acceleration but when you start to put your foot into it it starts to spit and sputer then as you let off the gas it smothes out again. Well I had know idea when the last time the truck had a tune up so I started there plugs, wires, my thought was the vac advance was bad so I bought a comeplete new distibutor that had points and condensor included and of course cap and rotor and also a new coil. Nope still doing the same thing.

Re: help setting timing
That sounds like you need a carb rebuild. If the accelerator pump is not giving you a good shot when you step on the throttle it will bog down and run rough until the carb can catch up. That would be my best guess. Good luck. They can be a pain can't they? But fun! Mike

Also, look at the choke, is it manual or vacuam? When you were trying to get your timing in, did you disconnect the vacaum advance hose? if you have a manual choke it should be open before you drive.Oldguy wrote:That sounds like you need a carb rebuild. Hand turn the motor until your rotor is pointing at #1 and the points are open then rotate your plug wires one hole over on the distributor. Then readjust your distributor back to the new #1 spark plug position, fire it up and reset your timing after the engine is up to temp and make sure your vacuum advance is capped off. Your spuddering sounds like the accelerator pump is not functioning. With the engine off look down the carb and actuate the throttle lever. If you see a steady stream of fuel coming out the two pump tubes your pump is fine. If not you'll need to remove the carb, disassemble and give it a good cleaning. Your accelerator pump is a plunger looking thingy made of either viton or leather. if it's viton it's probably torn or something. If it's leather you can soak it in motor oil for about 15 minutes and gently stretch out the sides. That should do it.

Re: help setting timing
Well that worked on the distributor and the problem with running like *#%^ was a stuck choke plate. thanks for your help guys.
