My first post: I have a 66 D200 383 4spd. I'm planning on replacing the engine with another big block (383-440). All the engines I find are mated to an auto trans. My question is : will an engine from an auto trans car or truck bolt right up to my granny 4spd? I hear that an auto tranny engine has a different crank that has to be drilled for the pilot bearing bushing. Izzat right?

Hola There
We all start some-where. Welcome
I am now a little puzzled for in 1966 there were no 383 cubed factory trucks. What is the date of mfg for your truck ( it is on an plate rivited near the catch/latch on the driver's side of the door frame ).
There is also the 400 cubed V8 if you are looking for the heavy weighted engines. When the 383 was stopped at the end of the 1971 production run, the 400 cubed engine took over in 1972 and stayed until the end of the 1978 production run.
What is wrong with your present engine ??? What colour is it ???

The 4 Speed crank has a hole where the pilot bearing goes for the shaft of the 4 speed, the automatic doesn't have this

Present engine is blue. I think it is a '64. I did some research and that's what the numbers indicate. I know that there were no 383 trucks until '67 but that wasn't my question. I have my answer now about the pilot bushing hole in the crank for a manual trans. engine. At this point I'll probably just rebuild my 383. Have wrist pin noise in 7 and 8 hole. Thanks

Hola There
You are correct that I did not answer your pilot hole question, but did ask you an question. Is the engine Blue or Turqu 's ???
If you have two wrist-pins going you are correct in just getting an complete re-build. Even the local NAPA Machine shop does this work here.

Robin,
I'm not sure but I don't think that's a given. I believe some are and some are not from what I have read on other forums. Might be worth checking into.

Some cranks in automatic equipted vehicles have NO pilot bushing hole, some are rough bored for a bushing (hole needs to be enlarged), and some are actually finished bored for the bushing and require nothing to be done. Napa reportedly has a special undersized bushing for the rough bored crank (at least two mopar engine rebuilding books say so).Your 383 should have a neutral balanced flywheel meaning you need to find an engine that is internally balanced,or have a machine shop balance your rebuilt assembly.

There is a aftermarket roller bearing available to use in lieu of the pilot bushing that fits all chrysler crankshafts. It sets in the large diameter inset hole at the end of the crankshaft. About any chrysler manual transmission parts supplier carries them. I don't remember where got mine but it was easy to find on the internet
