Tranny fluid leak near dipstick

Post by 1968D200 »

Hi All

I got under my truck today attempting to locate the tranny leak after I had cleaned the area up. After tightening all of the very loose inspection pan bolts which were causing some leaks, I then noticed another issue. There is a bolt on top next to the dipstick. It was loose so I tried to tighten it and apparently it has threads a mile long. It doesn't seem to be stripped out due to a decent amount of resistance. But a leak does seem to be coming from this area still.

Any ideas or experience with this problem? I'm hoping I don't have to pull the tranny and rethread the case. I'm not ready to rebuild the tranny at this point.

Thanks...

Sometimes... it is the o-ring that is in the case where the dip stick tube
fits into. :Thumbsup [IS there such a thing as a non-leaky 727?? :joker ]

I think your right on the money! I does appear to be pushing up from around the dipstick mount. I swear its not leaking anywhere else *cross fingers*

Thanks,
Collin

Its a common issue. O-rings aren't much more than a dollar. If it were my truck, I'd
also remove the pan, install a new gasket and filter and re-fill with new fluid if this
hasn't been done recently.

I will definetly get that done soon! So far it's only been driven around the neighbor hood and to the hardware store close by. The tranny fluid looks good but I intend to drop the pan, replace the gasket, filter and new fluid. The engine oil also needs a change. But when I went to Napa they couldn't even look up what filter it took. They said I need to come in with the part number :)
