/6 160-225-4.0?

Post by Skunkman »

I have a 66 ex~Military vehicle. How do I determine if it's the 160 or the 225? Will a Jeep 4.0L bolt in it's place? I want to start driving it daily. I believe I can achieve mileage in the teens. Just need a little more umph. I really dont feel the added weight of a bigger engine will be worth the trade off. I would like to just stay with the simplicity of the /6. Any suggestions?

Thanks! :salut

All factory slant 6 engines in Sweptlines were 225s except the 71 Sweptline Special base engine was the 198.

The 170 cu.in. Slant 6 was offered as a "no extra charge" option starting in '61 :Thumbsup

Seeing as yours is a 3/4 ton ex-military model, it will be safe to
assume it is a 225 cu.in. Slant 6. For your needs, I'd stick with
that engine. As an upgrade, an A318 [Poly] would be the route
I'd choose as it'll give you nice low end torque and will still pull
down half way decent mileage. Thats my :2cents

OK, here is the deal on the 170. It was available as an extra-light duty engine on the smallest GVW D100. It was an option from 61-65( I don't know if it was all of 65 or just the 4 headlight trucks). It was also available in the A100/A108 and the P200.

I bet there aren't too many D100s with this engine though.

I'd agree with you on that :Thumbsup . I thought your "all Sweptlines" statement might
be a bit too encompassing.... nothing more :study .

Hola Michael

You may also think of making the one barrel carb slant six into the factories " Super Six". The OEM factory "Super Six" had an 2 bbl carb, an matching OEM 2 bbl intake manifold and an OEM matching larger sized diam exhaust manifold ( casting number 4021537 ). This is as easy as removing your complete intake/exhaust assembly and adding an singe exhaust system as large as the OEM 383's. On top of the 2 bbl carb just place an era 318 air cleaner housing and tell all it is completely MoPar OEM.

??? 4.0 ??? If you do this, think of an differant transmission too.

dont think about a jeep 4.0 unless you have a lot of fab abality, and a deep set of pockets, its like putting a buick in a ford,it can be done, but why?,nothing matches up,even the starter is on the other side!!,of course if you have a wreck with a 4.0 and a itch to do it,then dont let me stop you!

I said that because I completely forgot about this engine. I looked it up after I saw your post.

I have access to a few 4.0 motors. I just wasn't sure about how far back the Jeep/Chrysler relationship went and whether or not they had interchangeable parts.

I do have an 'extra' 318 or 360 (depending on what I put the 360 in). I was looking for easy. thought if the 4.0 would bolt up I'd just go with it. I have a car trailer that I move projects around with and didn't know if the 225 would be up to the task. I dont want to dump the 6 on a whim. People all over are running these things with pretty good results. As someone asked in my transfer case post...'Is it broke?'. The 6 runs, so I guess this is all premature.

Call me crazy, just like old trucks and the 6 makes it even more unique. If the torque of the V8 cold justify the swap I'd do it. I also have a 400ci... but I think I'm going to save that for the Cordoba or the Warlock.

Just un-bolt your manifolds, add the above with the matching size exhaust pipe and enjoy.

I had a /6 in mine before the 440, and had absolutly no complaints about it, it will pull anything, I won bets on pulling, I pulled my friends 4x4 that broke down and he said the little six couldn't do it, I told him I'd bet as much money as he could come up with that I could and I would even open my door and stand on the rail and pull his piece of *#%^ without giving if fuel, he only had $100 and it was mine, I even pulled a 78 Chrysler Lebaron off a cement retainer wall, you can't stop a /6. and Jeffc mileage is correct, I drove from San Antonio Texas to Mountain View Missouri and back and cruised at 70 mph 225/3speed manual/3:23's and got 17mpg
I didn't build the /6 because I fell victom the "more horsepower you have the more you'll end up with" building idea.
I would do what Roger suggested and enjoy a fast truck that got over 15 mpg :Thumbsup
