1966 D200(2WD)727 tailshaft housing interchange?

Post by redd200 »

I cracked the tailshaft housing on my 1966 D200(2WD)727 automatic transmission. In looking at the old trucks, factory Dodge Service Manual, it shows that the tailshaft goes through a roller type bearing(Located inside the end of the tailshaft housing). However, in later torqueflite 727(Long tailshafts)it shows that the roller bearing inside the tailshaft housing, has been replaced with just a bushing instead? I have a chance to obtain another good tailshaft housing out of 1968(440)Road Runner. My question is whether or not the later(Long tailshaft housing)using a bushing(Instead of a roller bearing)will directly interchange with the original(Long tailshaft housing)which has the roller bearing? And, if being a bearing or bushing doesn't matter, will the later long tailshaft housings from most passenger car 727's directly interchange with my 1966 D200 tailshaft housing? Why or why not?

Secondly, does anybody have a good, long tailshaft housing that they will sell me, to fit my D200? Thanks!

It should, by 66, be the same tail shaft since both the car and
truck had the slip yoke on the tail shaft.
The one in your book is the earlier trany that had the
parking brake drum on the rear (you can see the threaded
end on the output shaft).
The parking brake drum was heavy which is why the
bearing is out on the end of the shaft, but once they
went to the slip yoke in the trucks the tail shaft sould
be the same.
So unless your 727 still has the parking brake drum on
the rear it should have the same tailshaft and case as
the cars. The easy way to tell for sure is to take your
yoke off the drive line and put it to the tailshaft of the
replacement tail shaft and see if it fits right......
I would think that the Roadrunner tailshaft case should work
just fine.

No, my 1966 D200, does have the slip yoke type tailshaft housing, with a slip yoke on the front of the driveshaft! I don't see anything that looks like a parking brake drum(Just the tailshaft housing, with nothing threaded or bolted to it)! But, in my 1966 Dodge truck Service Manual, I was looking at the long tail shaft(Slip yoke)727 transmission(Not the other, shorter tailshaft housing, that is definately different)! In that picture, it looks like it has some type of bearing in the end of the tailshaft(But, not a bushing?)? This is the only reason, that made me wonder if the later(Than 1966)tailshaft housing, would still work, even though it just has a bushing(Instead of a tailshaft bearing?)?

I just pulled a 67 727 out of a D200 and the drive line has the
slip yoke tailshaft like the cars (this truck was all stock with
dash lever shift cable to the outside of the case).

If your driveline has the slip yoke on the end of the driveline and
installs into the rear of the trany,
then the tail shaft/case is the same as the cars.
So as above, the car rear case should work just fine.

If it has the yoke bolted to the output shaft and/or
the brake drum is installed and the slipjoint is built into
the driveline then this is the trany in the truck book.
The drawing must not have been updated in the book to the later
drawing (not to uncommon) and the since the other tailshaft case was already in use in cars they may have felt it was not needed and I can under stand the confusion.
It can also be that some of the big trucks still used this tailshaft
setup even later were the brake drum is still on the rear.

My 66 parts book shows both tailshafts (long) types.

In cars, the slipyoke type case was frist used on Chrysler cars in 65
on the 727 and is the frist year that the ball and trunoin was dropped
in favor of a standard ujoint. The 409 still had the ball and trunion
in 65 and was change in 66. Both of these had the bearing
at the rear of the tailshaft in the case till changed to the slipjoint.
Ball and trunion is also called a Detroit Ball and was not uncommon
in the early 60s and 50s cars instead of a ujoint .

The other 727 shown in the truck book is the short shaft 727
that was used in 4x4, vans and some larger trucks.

A little more info I would like to have since I have never met
anyone that knows the progression of applications the trucks
went though very well and almost nothing is writen on the 727 in these years, when changes happend and in what years on trucks;
you should have a dash
lever shifter, does the shifter cable enter the case? or is it linked
to the lever on the outside of the case?

REDD200, Would it help if I took pictures of the tailshaft of my 1970 D-200? I can do that if you would like. It is a parts truck, but I don't feel like tearing the whole transmission apart to get the tailshaft, but if it isn't too bad to do to take apart, then we can work something out.

Yes, my D200 has the dash shift lever-but, I'll need to check to see if the shifter cable enters the case or connects to external linkage lever? I'll report back here, asap? Thanks!

Jims68:

1)I found a tailshaft housing today.

2)However, I need to get the transmission mount? If you still have this with your 727 transmission, if you could take a picture of this mount and of the tailshaft housing on your truck(So I can verify that your tailshaft housing is the same as mine(And, therefore the mount would be the same as mine))then, if you would E-mail me the pictures, I'd appreciate it? And, if you want to sell your transmission mount(If it's the same as on my D200?)then, check to see that it isn't broken(In good functional shape?)and let me know a price you would want for it? Thanks! redd200.

Redd, The pictures are on the way! Let me know if they don't show what you need, or if you need "closer" ones. ETC.
