Diesel into '62 4WD......

Post by wetstuff »

I sooo much like the sound of a diesel (a Ferrari V12 is outside my budget) that I was thinking that's there probably an Isuzu, or sumsuch, that would fit in the Dodge Caverns of my '62. The Slant 6 almost leaves enough room for a side-by-side...

It's a former USAF ambulance and dearly needs something nice done to it. I don't even really need the 4WD, just want to make a good 'roader' out of it.

Anybody wandering aound boneyards spot anything interesting...or heard of such a switch. Thanks.

perkins was available, but they arent common and would be hard to locate. there have been conversions useing the 4cyl cummins diesil. the 6 is too big from the more modern trucks without some modification to body work to make it fit. where theres a will theres a way. scout the salvage yards and see what has the right measurements to fit. but a gas motor sure would be a lot easier :Thumbsup

Diesel conversion equals very expensive. This factors in because it affects how long your return of investment will be. Unless you have a diesel pickup to part out already, then t's not so bad.

I've read a ton of discussions on http://www.binderbulletin.org. This is an International Harvester BB much like this one. If you can handle them posturing about their rigs like we do ours, then you can learn alot. They have a Diesel Talk forum there with tons of good info and some very knowledgable Dieselers.

As far as what to get, that's depending what you intend to do. The Cummins from the newer Dodge Trucks is the ticket (IMHO), though spendy. On my IH BB, one of the members put a Cummins 4BT in his Scout. Fits nicely and plenty of power. Perkins is a great one too. A 354 is what I would look for in a Perkins.

I know that in the 70's, Dodge offered an inline 6 Diesel from Mitsubishi. Pretty rare though I believe. Here's a link to a recent discussion about them on the Binder Board:

Thanks all... I better put the $$ in the basic upgrades (I have to farm all this out...), so I don't end up with a new Audi my wife would like...

BTW: Here's a peek at a similar instal that makes me itch: http://www.garbee.net/~cabell/photos1.htm

Cheers.
