Gas Tank Replace or Relocation
Gas Tank Replace or Relocation
Hello, I am new to the forum and my 1971 Dodge D 100 Stepside. I am having gas tank issues as it has been sitting a very long time. After removing it , there is a slight leak in the lower seal and the entire inside badly rusted. 2 questions for the group
1) Is it better to relocate it to the read end below the bed, if so is there a conversion kit or what tank have you used??
2) If keeping it in stock location, who is making a replacement tank, I cannot seem to find a new one.

Re: Gas Tank Replace or Relocation
The search function on this site is very effective. Lots of discussions on the topic.

Re: Gas Tank Replace or Relocation
There are posts on here about mounting the tank between the rear frame rails. A Mustang seems to fit nicely, can be sourced new, and the fuel gauge sending unit is directly compatible. The down side is it displaces the spare tire carrier. I believe there are some YouTube videos on this conversion, also.
Van's is offering re-popped behind the seat fuel tanks along with fuel sending units: https://vansauto.com/product/61-71-dodg ... chttnk611/ However, it will not be a direct bolt-in and will require some mounting and filler neck modifications for your '71.
There is a company called "Gas Tank Renu" that can repair/recondition your existing tank. Personally, I have no experience with them. As with any product, there is always some bad reviews. They're a franchise chain, so there maybe a location near you. https://www.gastankrenu.com/locate-a-dealer/
I often find Google search performs better than the forum search tool.

Thank you but I am having trouble searching for this. What subject do I use? Sorry for being brain dead. I searched gas tank relocation.

Re: Gas Tank Replace or Relocation
Really? I've been pretty happy with the search function here. Were I using Google, I'd have to append the keyword string with "site:sweptline.org" to avoid a page full of extraneous trash.

Re: Gas Tank Replace or Relocation
Type this into the google search box, less the quotation marks: "site: sweptline.org fuel tank" You can also try "site: sweptline.org gas tank"
I found this when testing my suggestion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=timt0UAAROc

Re: Gas Tank Replace or Relocation
I have twin tanks outside the frame, this was a dealer instalation. Right now I have them both being reproduced. Really nice custom fit probably the best way I seen yet. Can't find the original manufacturer of my auxiliary tanks . Once I get my new tanks back I might offer the old for sale .

Re: Gas Tank Replace or Relocation
I'm guessing that was pretty common at the time. Of the four trucks that have gone through my hands, three of them have had that feature. There were two styles: One with a gooseneck and cap protruding from the side of the bed, and one with a flush mount cover door.

Re: Gas Tank Replace or Relocation
How were those hung on the truck may I ask? Here's where my tanks came from.
back when there was not as many gas stations I suppose.1971 Dodge W100
Re: Gas Tank Replace or Relocation
back when you could only get gas on even or odd days
Re: Gas Tank Replace or Relocation
Back when gas was always .10 cents difference between 3 grades of octane. I know I would have done what alot of folks done here installing a tank between the frame rails . My 79 f150 had a tank in that area as well.

That is a good idea. Is anyone reproducing the saddle tanks??

Re: Gas Tank Replace or Relocation
Mine are hung from the bed.
I'm guessing there are tubes welded into the tank for long carriage bolts with the heads flush inside the bed box.

Re: Gas Tank Replace or Relocation
Yes, those be the tanks! Mine were hung straight through the bed sheet steel and not through the bed rails you might think. I'm going to look at GM 1973 1 ton model trucks and hang off the frame .
