Great now it's stalling

Post by Cody100 »

Seems like I'm having one problem after another here... I got the rad flushed and back in and took her out for a test drive, the heat gauge sat right in the middle which was nice and there was no coolant spraying out anywhere :Thumbsup I noticed a different issue while on the test drive, while I was accelerating my truck kept sputtering and sounded like it was going to die as I was pressing the gas pedal. If I let off and accelerated slowly it wasn't too bad. As I was bringing it back in to the garage it died completely (it's never died on me before) I tried to start it again but after trying several times and it not firing I decide to check the forums before doing any damage. What type of issue does this sound like? Timing or fuel was my guess but I'm not sure where to start.

Here is the link to my build thread to show recent work that I've done, I sure hope I didn't cause this new problem

"Sounds" like your accelerator pump in the carb isn't working right. Can't really fix those... but they can be replaced.

Check the fuel filter. As you started out, you weren't getting enough fuel to keep it running under load, and by the time you got home it was completely clogged. Same thing happened to me, except I wasn't fortunate enough to make it back to my house. I guess the longer I have good fuel in it, the more sludge is breaking loose from inside the tank.

If it aint' broke..., I probably haven't fiddled with it.

When you tried to re-start your truck, did you check for spark & fuel?

2 weeks ago that happened to me. Started looking at the carb, then ignition. Turned out I had very weak spark. Did the pionts since they were a year old. No help. Then while testing the spark I was getting zapped with the pliers on the wire boot. I pulled the plug out of the boot and found corrosion. Not just one plug but many of them.
New wires later and a swapped out condenser. (I had swapped the condenser before finding the corrosion.) Sure enough that was it. She now starts like she should.
Side note: putting the points in gave me a headache. A new Pertronix II and Flame Thrower coil is on the bench waiting to be installed.

Good luck and tell us what you find is the problem,
Jimharold

I second the fuel filter inspection, remove, drain and see if you can easily blow through it .. I had some stalling, wouldnt re-start issues and it was a mix of crud in the fuel tank itself, and build up inside of the fuel lines.

Alright I bought new pugs and an fuel filter, the filter was pretty dirty when I turned it upside down. The wires were also corroded but the local parts store didn't have any in stock. When the wires come in I'll replace everything and let you guys know how she's running.

Changed the plugs, wires and fuel filter and seems to have solved the problem. Started it up yesterday and went for a drive it ran great, when I came back I let it idle for 5 mins and no stall. Thanks for all the help guys!
