good cam for 318?

Post by naloleal »

So here's what I've got so far, looking to improve on my '66d100
318 LA series engine ( installed before I picked the truck up)
Edelbrock 650CFM 4barrel carb
Headers running the dual exhaust
Offenhauser dual plane intake manifold
3 speed 727 automatic trans

Looking to replace the cam, and was told to use edelbrock performer cam 2177.

Anybody have experience with this part?

Truck is just something I drive for fun, throw stuff in the bed to take to the dump and cruise around my little town in. But when I step on it, I want to really be set back in my seat. When that kid pulls up next to me in his import and revving his muffler, I want to leave him in my dust without breaking the bank.

Thoughts?

I like eddy stuff but, not their cams. Who knows where they get them from these days. You might consider the Comp cams XE line or the Lunati line. If you want hot rod performance, then stay away from truck cams. They are made for torque and not performance. If you aren't towing then, you could get a cam designed for the rpm range you need the step on it factor. Consider idle vacuum, and drive ability. You can talk with the cam manufactures just to get a recommendation on specs. Then get whatever you want. Also make sure if you have have new springs. Let us know what you decide.

Hola Sir

Have you contacted NAPA and said something like, "I want an Cam Shaft for a 1978 Dodge lil Red Express".

The Clue-less Clerk may say, " Is this a car or truck" ?

The un-knowing clerk may then say, "... what engine is the vehicle with" ?

Your answer would be, " ... Only The E-58 Coded LA-360".

After all of the above --- ask what a E-58 Cam Shaft and a Timing Gear Set will cost ---- with a dis-count.

Now contact https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/rafram ... plate=true and ask
them about the same E-58 Cam Shaft and Timing Chain Set cost.

Call howards cams...they're about the same price wise as comp but grind their own cams in house...they can grind a custom.cam for you if needed.
