Help with pulleys on 318, need dual alternator belt set-up!

Post by Mopower »

Need to run dual alternator belts for the electrical upgrades I'm doing to the E30 (aka W300) plow truck I'm still tinkering with as the season is pretty mild right now (raining today...).

After doing some searching around, I found a 100 amp (USA made Tuff Stuff) squareback alternator (and maybe a custom made Denso unit that can pump out 200 amps but that is pretty spendy and maybe a year down the road). Anyway, I don't see this alt running off a single belt, so I need to find the crank and waterpump pulleys to run dual belts on the alt.

As far as my research goes, 360 crank pulleys look totally different than 318 so that's probably out. What I think I may be looking for are the pulleys off a early 70's 318 that had AC originally?

At any rate, if someone has a set of pulleys that will work, I need them asap. Of course this all has to line up perfectly with the alternator pulleys so if there's a different set of brackets for the alternator I would need that too.

I'm not having any luck finding this stuff with general Google/eBay searches, hoping someone here can shed some light on this, and maybe even have the parts I need.

Thx in advance!!!

were i found one was on a i wanna say a 66 dodge van with a 318. it had a what you are needing. also schucks had sold me a new one for pretty cheap. cant remember the amps it put out though. im sure you can put a double pulley on a single pulley 100 or 200 amp alt.

The alternator I'm running right now, as well as the one I've having shipped, have the dual belt pulley on them. It's the other pulleys I'm looking for. The right crank and waterpump pulleys are what I'm looking for.

Put an ad in the Parts Wanted section. If you're near Washougal, Bud Thorp
[aka PowerWagon54] might have what you need. Be cautious of the high amp
alternators!! :pale :2cents These old wiring harnesses are designed to handle
35amp alternators. :pale

I'm on the other side of the state, but I'll get a hold of him.

I'm actually trying to put a battery on the other side of the rig as well, and will have an 8 gauge charge cable going straight from the Alt to that battery, which will of course connected to the other one via a parallel connection. I ran a high amp charging system in my '71 Roadrunner years ago and ran a 10 gauge cable from the Alt straight to the battery, pretty much bypasses the Amp gauge in the dash, or at least takes a lot of heat off of it.

If you really are running a lot of amps for whatever reason, then it's a good idea to get behind the dash, disconnect and bolt together the factory ammeter leads, insulate them and run a Voltmeter instead. This may be what I end up doing here, although I'll wait to see if there's a need for it. The second charge cable usually takes care of it.
