I want to put a fluid temp guage on 727, did they have a port for it from the factory?

No.

There are 2 common options. Easiest is to add a sender in the pan.
This is real easy if you have an aluminum pan. Drill a hole and tap it.
I did this on my crew cab. A more complicated, but accurate method
is to add a tee inline on the cooling line running from the trans to the
cooler. Then install the sender in the tee. I did this on my 69 Fury.

my 78 dodge van 23ft motor home with the 440 and 727 has a stock temp probe in the dipstick. the dipstick is plastic and has a probe on the tip of it. two wires go into the wiring harness and up to a dummy light.
but i doubt a person would be able to find a donor.
how is your truck coming along? last time i saw it was going together nicely.
and thanks again for all the parts.

very good, I have the body on, the engine wired, all I have to finish is the brakes and it will be drivable, but off course there are always those little things that need to be done
