Have been searching through old posts to find out which rears will bolt in place of my stock 1971 Dana 60 rear.
What I think I know so far is basically anything 65-93 will bolt up for a rear. Correct? If so, why wont 94 and up? Spring pads too wide? Rear to wide/narrow?
Would a rear from a Van work as well as from a truck?
Any Ford or Chevy uses that will bolt up also? (I think I remeber seeing that a 14 bolt will work somewhere)
Trying to figure out how wide of a net I can throw to find a useable rear.

Pretty sure your spring perches are unchanged till 94 or 96 when they changed.

Re: Bolt in Rear ends for swaps?
The pre 72 1 tons had a 34" wide frame (Like modern one tons). As Fred mentioned in 72 the 1ton frames got wider(38") I dont know at what point they went back to 34", but I think it was 2002. Sweptline 3/4 ton frames are 38"wide so a 1969 to 2001? Dana 60(59-68 will work but only have 16 spline axles) or a 1972-2001? dana 70 would make a good doner.
Chevy used the 34" frame straight through on all thier trucks,so a 14 bolt corporate,or dana from a chevy would need the spring perches moved to go under a Swept 3/4 ton.
Ford used a 38" frame for about the same time as Dodge did...Though I try not to learn too much about Fords.. same goes for IH...

Re: Bolt in Rear ends for swaps?
are there any offset issues with using a 1 ton axle set front and rear?
May just be the right time to upgrade both the front and rear.

Re: Bolt in Rear ends for swaps?
The pad widths changed at some point after 1994, when they went to 3" springs.
However the center to center distance didn't change. I have a 1998 Dana 60 under
my 1970 W200 Crew. I took a grinder and cut notches into the corners of the pads
to allow mounting to the 2-1/2" springs.
The shock mounts are also different. The later axles mount the shocks to brackets
welded to the tubes. Using the older shock plates will not work, since the tubes are
larger and the 3" springs. Creating brackets to mount the shocks to the frame was
pretty easy. This also gives you staggered shocks, instead of opposed. This is
supposed to help with spring wrap and also allows you to adjust your angles, which
will alter shock travel and response.
I have some pictures and info in my Crew Progress thread on pages 11-13.
