are 225's interchangeable?

Post by oldodger »

I'm looking into taking the slant six 225 out of my 61 and putting in a 225 out of a 68 Dart and hooking it up to the stock 4 speed that is in the truck now. Will there be any problems matching this engine up with this truck and transmission?
Thank you?

IIRC the cranks changed in about 68...the input shaft on the older tranny + the larger crank hole = bad....You could possibly use a pilot bushing :thinking

Sorry. You're way ahead of me. What is IIRC? I think you're telling me the crank and the tranny won't match up. But I don't understand why. What does a pilot bushing do?
Thank you.

IIRC (If I Remember Correctly)

Sounds like the pilot bearing holes are different....

Pilot bearings is what the transmission shaft rides on in the back of the crank they are hard to find.....at least for me.

IIRC is shorthand for "If I remember correctly."

The pilot bushing is what goes in a hole at the back of the crankshaft on manual transmission autos. The front tip of the transmission input shaft fits into this bushing. Apparantly there must have been a size change in either the input shafts or cranks on 225's between those yrs.

yeah IIRC is If I Recall Correctly..

I had a 72 block with a 62 tranny, and it worked, just vibrated, and made funny noises sometimes...

since the new block is a 68, its a crap shoot if its the older or newer crank (depending on casting dates)

someone with more experience should chime in soon..i put my 225 on the wayside in favor of a 413, so my knowledge is kinda thin...you could ask over on http://www.slantsix.org and get better info :Thumbsup

It's the centering ring that the flywheel fits onto the crank that changed in 67.
bolt pattern and the rest is the same.
If you install a early fly onto the late crank there will be a space between the centering
ring on the crank and fly which will make a vibration............because it will not be
as centered on the crank as it should....
I have used a pop can (top and bottem cut and laid across the ring) bolted between
the 2 (pretty backyard, I know) and seems to work just fine.....
