Front Sump or Rear Sump
On small and big block trucks were they factory front sump or rear sump. I am almost certain that my truck before I took it apart was a rear sump. It is a 71' D200 with a 440. I am trying to see what the factory set-up was and is it possible to change the trucks to rear sump? Let me know what you guys have done.

Hello There
I've been wrong before so I feel it is OK to say,
"...Me thinks the 440 and the 400 showed up
for the 1972 production year ".
For 1971 the only large engine truck was the
2 bbl 383 with single exhaust.
Either way, the slump for any of them needs to be t
the same.

Re: Front Sump or Rear Sump
My '67 W200 original BB came with a front sump. Never could figure out why other than it holds about 8 quarts and appears to be the same one as on the earlier D500 we had so Chrysler could just use what they had. It is pretty close to the axle and there is much more room for a rear sump. Nothing in the way at all on mine for a rear sump.

Re: Front Sump or Rear Sump
As Rodger mentions, I believe all Swepts had front sumps.
Along with Russ, I have a 71 W with a 400 and rear sump and 70 W with a 318 and rear sump.
Both rear sumps clear just fine, and I think even better. I also have a deep Moroso rear sump
pan that came on a 440 I bought that will easily fit also. I plan to use it when I freshen up the 400.
I would use it now, but I can't get the pickup out with the engine in place.

Re: Front Sump or Rear Sump
as mentioned the 440 never came in a Sweptline from the factory, however as you probably know I have had a 440 in mine since 1990, it came from a car and had a mid sump oil pan that I changed to rear sump, then I droped it 5 " and still have the rear sump, and as you probably have read I don't baby my 440 or my truck, no problems from the drop, the only thing I have to worry about going to jail over is the fact that I thought I had the 440 gettin the proper fuel volume and carb tuned by vacuam guage, I was wrong and was shown the light by a Carb specialist and now the 440 is a hell of a lot faster
so I'm guilty of STARVATION a crime punishible by 1000 lashes from the Mopar whip

Re: Front Sump or Rear Sump
I have heard a few people saying they are having a difficult time finding a rear sump pan for a 440. All the aftermarket places don't seem to have them anymore. If you find a 72-78? truck with a 440 in a salvage yard grab the pan. I don't know if the 400 uses the same pan.

Re: Front Sump or Rear Sump
The IFS swap I did on my truck made it where I had to use rear sump, I got one through Mopar performance, less than $100. Fit like a glove.

Well Mancini wasn't specifically mentioned, the other places mentioned here didn't have them and can't get them. http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/sho ... ost5372365

Re: Front Sump or Rear Sump
I've got a feeling that you can probably buy the rear sump at an Autoparts store also, just my giving the information of a car/example 1974 Dodge Monaco 440/727 and they can look it up and get it, but don't use the example for it had a nid sump oil pan, sometimes people get hung up in the aftermarket and forget about the parts store and the OEM.

The pan that Hughes has for $105.00 is a Mopar Performance pan with pickup and dipstick.

Re: Front Sump or Rear Sump
If you change to a rear sump does the oil dipstick give you a correct oil level? I have a rear sump on a 360 (from a B250 van) and the extra long dipstick follows a channel on the inside of the oil pan and dips into the rearof the sump.

Re: Front Sump or Rear Sump
Sir
The location of the Oil Slump and the Dip Stick/tube
must be a match. Just because you find a stick,
does not mean it is the correct lenght.
The 360 Oil Pan is buit different that a 318 at
the rear of the pan. The two do not mix and match.
There is an advantage of using the matching
tube and stick from the van. the tube has an
forard arch and is higher than what is used in
cars and trucks. This makes it easier for us
shorter folks to see and reach the tube when
re-turning the oil stick.
I hope I said all of this correct.

Re: Front Sump or Rear Sump
I guess I should have made it clear. I have been building my 440 for several years, because I have trouble making up my mind. I am now building a will use a stroked 440. I have two Milodon truck pans and pickup tubes. I plan on making more power than I really need. My original question was basically, will a rear sump pan like I have have any trouble clearing the I-beam?

Re: Front Sump or Rear Sump
I have a rear sump and straight axle and droped front end, and as you should have read, if not, you'll see pictures from the Cruise in September, I built my 440 to have fun it, never had any problem, I hit corners hard
