Is there a PTO genius out there somewhere?

Post by heviarti »

I have three PTOs sitting in the back of my 1962 w200. I can't seem to find anyone who knows anything about PTOs, gears/compatibility, or where to look for parts for them. One is a Heil, one's a chelsea, and the other is indeterminate. I'll post some pics. So, anyone know a great deal about PTOs? I need to get one of these three installed on my NP420. I have a Braden M3 to go under the back of my Power Wagon. (then I'll have two winches)

BTW, I've been netless for a long time. If you haven't heard from me, that's why. I've pointed alot of people here, and I know you have at least one new member because of it.

I have a PTO installed on my transfer case right now. I want to install a second PTO on my transmission to run a second winch.

I have a tulsa PTO on my NP201 Xfercase.
I've been told there out of business now and no rebuilt kits exist. I was told to just to take it apart and get the parts #'s and order the parts individually. I rebuilt my Xfercase but I didn't rebuild the PTO since seemed to be working ok and it wasn't leaking. I don't plan to use it that much (hopefully!).
Sorry that's all I got

I used to work at a hydraulic shop and have rebuilt a few of them. There are very few moving parts. You should be able to find parts like bearings and seals at a bearing supplier. If you need gears, try a semi-truck parts supplier. Both of the brands you mentioned are well supported.
The one with the most teeth will give your engine the best mechanical advantage, thus the slowest output speed at a given RPM.
Hope this helps.

I was told there is some question of what gears can be used. Someone somewhere said they installed a PTO, it all rotated by hand, however when they fed power to it, it bound. That does not make sense to me mechanically, but what does make sense is the gear can only be so deep from the center shaft before the PTO won't bolt down to the transmission. Someone else said that the gear you need for each PTO differs by transmission. Of course that was the same dealer who immediately became retarded and started drooling when i gave him the numbers off the PTO... It seems very difficult to find someone who knows the subject inside and out.

Have you tried Six States over in Boise? They have a bunch of 4wd stuff in there, and maybe someone there could help?

You might find some good answers here too, since you are working with a np420 :thinking
