My PTO conundrum, now (hopefully) with pics.
My PTO conundrum, now (hopefully) with pics.
I tried posting this topic once, but lost all my text when I tried to add pics. I think I can only reliably reply with pics. I'm limited to my Palm Centro for net.
So, I called PTO Specialties in Portland, as reccommended by another member. They're kind of drawing a blank so far. Their books are saying the PTO drive gear in the NP420 is helical. That doesn't sound right, because the 420 is an old style transmission, and every PTO I've ever seen has had straight gear teeth.
If I can post the pics, the details are as follows:
The one on the top left is marked "PT1-1D W.A.P.D" (or maybe W.A.P.O) "MADE USA"
The one on the top right is the Heil, the unit I most want to install. It's marked "POWER TAKE OFF MANUFACTURED BY THE HEIL CO. MILWAUKEE, WIS. U.S.A. NO B297F"
The unit on the bottom (my second choice) is marked "MACHINE PRODUCTS DIV CENTRAL FIBRE PRODUCTS CO CHELSEA MICH MODEL (blank) SHAFT (blank)" A milled area on the left says "1BW" and the top is marked "401-2" next to a mark that appears to be the letter "W" with a mirror image "M" beneath it.
Anyway, any resource or genius that can help, go for it. I need to mount up a second PTO for a rear winch.

The NP201 transfer case accepts the 10-bolt PTOs.

I'm pretty gosh darn sure the PTO on my transfer is 6 bolt. I want to put one on the trans so as I can run a second winch.
I'm hearing conflicting info now. some people say the PTO runs off third, now I'm hearing first/reverse from another source. Very hard to find any definitive info.

If the PTO runs off of the transmission, I'd say that reverse would have to be one of the gears that it runs off of. But I don't know. Alot of 2wd vehicles have PTO & If those vehicles are stationary while the PTO is running, then maybe its like a Farm implement PTO. Vehicle is in neutral, PTO is engaged but only goes 1 direction......I am only familiar with t-case driven PTO's.
Now if its a live or rolling PTO (vehicle is driven while PTO is running) such as a brush fire truck that pumps & rolls too, then looks like ALL gears would drive that PTO.

Can't run off all gears. What I'm saying is the PTO gear must mesh with a certain gear in the transmission; It has to be a gear that will rotate under power in neutral, or while any other gear is engaged. The gear in the PTO only has two positions, engage and disengage... and where the gear sits in either position is pretty well written in stone. I do not know which gear in the transmission the PTO receives motion from.

Re: My PTO conundrum, now (hopefully) with pics.
I have never had a NP 420. Does it have 1 or 2 PTO ports? Can a PTO be mounted facing either direction, or in other words can they be flipped ?
Have you posted over on powerwagonadvertiser website? Those guys have mostly FFPW military rigs & most have PTO's. They may be able to help you out. My PTO is off of the t-case.

I have one that is built to be reversible, but yes, I think you can flip one if the seals are good enough. Some have the shaft dead center and it wouldn't matter at all. I think the Heil may need seals to reverse it's position.

Hey Dusty, I think I've found a dual sahft 10 bolt pto. Can you put up picks of yours?? Thanks. Is it a differnt model number than FTD-7 since it has two shafts??
