Emblem restoration?

Post by cudajimmy »

I've been out of the game for awhile and my pot metal restoration guy has since retired. Any recommendations for sending some emblems to? Quite a bit of pitting. I was referred to a place called Paul's Plating or something like that, in Pa. I called them, and they want $3800 to restore my emblems. That's just a tad over budget for me.

If you guys have anyone you've used for this that was reasonable and you would recommend, please post it up here or PM me.

Thanks,

CJ

Pauls is known for their good work and they have always been expensive. That is the place you take your Packard, (very antique car stuff) and other "rare" parts too when you want that Concourse show chrome! I used Frankford Plating in Philadelphia when I had work done for my De Soto because they were (at that time) a good chrome plater and they are local to me so I could just drop stuff off to them. HOWEVER; That was in 2007. Reasonable? Well... it certainly didn't cost me $3800. They also replated a Beverly Motors emblem where the car was originally sold and that alone cost me almost $100 7 years ago! The cost of chrome has skyrocketed over the years due to EPA stuff. I am not saying that is a bad thing, but it sure did hurt the little guys!! Most likely it will be cheaper if you can find some really nice original/used emblems and just go with that. That is what I did on my Sweptline. They are in North Philadelphia and you always hear of "Shootings" in the "Frankford" section. :shame

How is their work now? Who knows... this is just some info for you! albeit OLD info:salut

Thanks for the info Jim. Problem is, this actually isn't for my Swepty. It's for my 1965 Chris Craft Constellation. I've been looking for several years for better emblems than mine, and I actually found one NOS set, but they had probably about 15 pits per square inch. And they had never been out of the box. I could have bought them for $1000 at the time, but I figured I could restore mine for a fraction of that, so I passed. I may just do the pit removal work myself and send them off somewhere to be plated. My local plating shop said they couldn't plate pot metal because their tanks are too hot and it ruins them. Personally, I think they just didn't want to jack with them.

Ah.... that clears it up! Yeah, you will have to have them re-chromed rather than "finding" a set. I am surprised that someone doesn't repro them...???? Probably some videos on Youtube on how to fill the pits. ?? I am not sure though as I haven't looked.

Have you Googled for any Chrome shops in OK? How about a H-D dealer? Who does their chroming?

Good Luck! and I'd love to see that boat!
Jim

There is a chrome shop in Ogden, UT, and another in Brainerd, MN that do outstanding work AND do pot metal. They are not cheap (who is, anymore?), but they have top resto-quality plating available. You'll have to bing them, I do not remember the names
