How much is this 1965 D-100 worth?

Post by Truckhead219 »

Hey guys,

I'm new to the classic truck world, and just picked up a 1965 D-100 Sweptline.

The drive train is original, 58K /6, 4 speed

The matte black paint and pink obviously isnt...

absolutely no rust, runs like a top. NO power brakes, steering, no a/c, no stereo.

All the lights work, inside and out as well as the gauges. Its in pristine condition.

How much do you think I could sell it for if I return the color to something more 60's? like seafoam green/flat white?

Here are some pics.

Let me know what you guys think!

:welcome looks like a pretty straight truck. IMO, you would be hard pressed to make a profit off the truck with a complete quality paint job . You will certainly get some feedback to your question off this site. You might just drive the truck for a while and enjoy it. Chris. Read through this:

Yeah, I probably wouldnt make any money from painting the thing professionally. I was going to try and do it myself.

Do you have anymore tips? Is it worth converting to PS,PB and A/c? Leave it as is and drive it around?

I was also curious if anyone could lead me to the right place to buy parts??

It will need a new radiator pretty soon as well as some steering parts, (it has a lot of play in the steering)

What parts would I need to tighten up the steering?

Also, is installing speakers into the doors a bad idea? Would that affect the value?

Thanks!

Post what you need in the parts wanted section. Bud Thorp( powerwagon54) is a great source for parts and can rebuild your steering box. I would not waste time and money on power steering...if you replace the worn out parts in the front end, steering is fine. :2cents There is a power steering system in the works. Check out thread under steering suspension. I think you should paint the exterior pink and call it the "panther special". There is a a member with a pink truck called "Salmon Ella". Chris.

Haha that pink truck is awesome.

How much would you value my truck at?

Btw, The turning radius is MASSIVE, I can barely flip a U turn. Is this because the steering is warn out?

How do your trucks turn?

Holy hell Txstwostep!! your sand dune white d100 is a beauty!!

How much did you spend on the V8 that you dropped into it??

I am thinking of keeping this thing, and getting it to a similar level that you did with your truck. I just dont know if I will like the long bed :/

Welcome to the site. :welcome :usa
You can probably get your radiator re-cored and avoid having to
find something new. As Chris mentioned, Bud Thorp can rebuild
your steering box. You can buy a drag link new, along with the
tie rod ends and king pins.

As for current value, a sunny West Coast price would probably be
~$2500+...... :thinking

Personally, I wouldn't hack holes in the doors to put speakers. Others
have stuck them on the kick panels, on each side of the gas tank, etc..
There are probably posts with photos you could go off of. :idea

Looks like a nice truck as is.... I wouldn't change a thing. :2cents
Go with your plan of trying your hand at painting it.... Have fun! :clap

Sweet! Thanks a lot.

How would I go about getting a new core for the radiator?

I was also considering a V-8 and a highway capable tranny. Whats the going rate for a married Engine/Tranny?

This thing just feels gutless... haha

EDIT*

Also, can anyone suggest a place to guy a radio? and everything else to make a sound system?

Stop by a radiator shop with your truck and I'm sure they'd be able to
give you an estimate. If you're thinking of switching engines, you'd want
to get a Sweptline V8 radiator.... so make sure which way you're going
engine-wise first. :Thumbsup

An A318 or LA318 will bolt up to the bell housing currently in your truck.
You'd need the correct hydraulic clutch flywheel for a 318. This would be
the time to put in a new pressure plate, pilot bushing, throw out bushing
and disc too. :idea You'd also need the firewall-to-engine wire harness
to keep things in order.

As far as the tranny, the 4spd in your truck is a very good and reliable one.
You might want to keep it in there. Check your axle ratio on the VIN tag.
If it is a 3.55 or 3.91, you could look for a 2.94 or 3.23 pumpkin to swap in. :idea :2cents

As far as a sound system, it looks as though someone has already cut a
hole in the dash.... so I'd think an audio shop would be able to set you up
with something that utilizes that space.

Awesome!

Thanks for all of the great info.

The only reason I'm considering to switch out the tranny, is that it just feels old.

The clutch, the shifting. The gears feel feel really short, and when I let off the gas quickly the tranny doesn't like it.

Not to mention highway cruising...

Well.... it is 49 years old ..... That's probably 98 in "truck years" :thinking :joker :joker
There are other routes to go on a tranny, but it normally
isn't an inexpensive venture. The three 10 spline input
shaft trannys used for Sweptlines were the A745 3spd, the
NP435 4spd and the NP420 4spd. You've got the best of these
three in your truck now.... in my opinion.

Most anything you do to a 49 year old truck will run into some $$.

Well, that doesn't sound comforting.

I was under the impression these things are easy as hell the work on and the parts are cheap!

Maybe I'm a little over my head and should repaint and sell...

They are easy to work on. Compared to say a 2008 pick up from any maker. Parts are cheap. Maybe and if you know what to look for . :thinking
Now if it was a 67 to 72 Chev/GMC truck, Their is tons of crap for those. Sweptys and Dodge/Fargo trucks in general are like an orphan cousin. There but no support. Or very little compared to the others. :pale

I don't think anyone said they're not easy to work on. :thinking :thinking
As far as "cheap" parts, it depends on each person's definition of cheap.

As an example....
Pulling the radiator out of your Sweptline is easy as hell....
A re-core will run you approximately $325-$400. You can also
pursue an aftermarket replacement aluminum radiator for $225-$275
and could make it work with minimal fabrication...

Another....
To completely re-do the brakes on your D100 [drums, wheel cylinders, backing plate
hardware, seals, etc.] would probably run you $300 if the drums can be turned or upwards
of $600 if you need to locate new drums....

I'm not sure what an Earl Scheib scuff-n-spray paint job is running these days, but
for an collision shop to do it decently, I'd think you'd be looking at $1800+ :thinking
If you're handy with a paint gun and know how to prep the body, you could probably
knock if off for less than half that ?.... just a guess...

Yeah I thought I bought it at least 100-200 under avg market value....I paid $2500

I was thinking of painting the pink to white with a rattle can and putting it back up for $3000

Or maybe a rustoleum roll on for $100, getting it cherry red and putting it back up for $3300

Do you guys think it would sell?? Or am I just day dreaming here..

Id sell it as is and maybe break even. Unless you go all out on paint, the next guy will have to undo your work and charge you for it

Damn, yeah I'm stuck here.

I want to at least get the truck to stop over heating so I could sell it in good faith and drive it daily for now.

Is it possible to fab a replacement radiator that "almost" fits and just make it work with metal and a welder?
