off topic, non dodge truck...help needed

Post by wideblock »

i know its not a dodge question, but we have a pretty diverse group here so i figured it would be worth a shot. im having some problems with my 86 toyota 1 ton. anyone here know anything about these rice burners???

1986 toyota 2wd long bed 1 ton. 22rec engine, 5spd stick, fuel injected, a/c, & p/s with 200k miles on the block, 75k miles on the head, 58 miles on a full tune up (full tank of 93 octane, plugs, cap, rotor, wires and 02 sensor)

problem 1... after sitting overnight it takes forever to start. once it starts, the rest of the day it will fire off on the bump and go. even if its set for hours, it still fires off fast and goes. let it set overnight and its back to cranking a while.

problem 2... 3 years ago when i sent the truck off to live with dad it had some pretty good nads for a 4 banger. now, not so much. its only been 10k miles since i drove it last. before, it had what felt like secondaries on a 4bbl. around 3000rpm it would kick in harder and propell the truck on down the road. now the "secondaries" dont seem to be kicking and it pulls smooth (and slow) from idle to 6000rpm.

any ideas??? i dont speak toyota... :banghead

I own an older Toyota P/U (83) which displays similar issues. But mine is carbureted. I gotta pump that gas pedal in the morning. I believe its a lack of fuel thing, but on an injected motor I don't know how you'd remedy it.....I'd say your lack of "secondaries" is fuel delivery related also. I wouldn't monkey with anything outside of the fuel system for now.....Is fuel pump/pressure possibly lacking?

thats what im leaning to. found out the pump has a one way anti siphon feature to keep the pressure in the lines. i am also assuming that a weak pump and lack of pressure could be also responsible for my lack of power. so im gonna pop a new pump in it this coming saturday and see what happens.

This might be a stupid question but here goes...How is your fuel filter? Had a buddy with a 86 r 22 and it seemed to have issues keeping a clean fuel filter. It wouldn't show any gunk on it when pulled but replace it and it would run great. Might have been another issue that kept fouling it but you never know. It sounds like the fuel pressure is not staying in the lines over night and you're having to purge the air out of them to get it to start. So i guess either of those two things could b giving you heartache. Good luck

I would look at the fuel pressure regulator before you spent money on a pump. Erik

The fuel pump has a check valve in it that keeps prime in the system also the truck will demand more pressure at higher rpm if there is not enuf pres it will not advance timing and if the motor hears a ping it will pull even more timing out. you can rent a fuel pressure gauge from your local parts house with the fittings to check it out good luck.

your the first one who has confirmed that suspicion i had. i wondered if there was some sort of an anti siphon valve on the top of the pump. it acts as if the fuel is draining from the line over night. guess this gives me one more thing to check out. yota guys suggested a thermal switch that controls how much fuel you get by the temp of the engine. no way to test it and it costs 187 bucks to see if it was the problem or not. rather test the free stuff then try the expensive stuff...lol

I just looked on alldata and by the year of your truck it says they did not have a thermal switch for that year model and such.
