You guys are going to love this story!

Post by prosparky475 »

So I am in the market for a new truck I shop around on ebay for a few weeks and come across a 69 power wagon. Now I live in Omaha and the truck is in Clarkston Wa Now a smart guy would have the truck shiped but NO! that would cost to much (750$) I can get a one way air line ticket for 150$ but then I dont book it right away so it it cost me 350$ then the wife wants to go (for the adventure) at the last minute and anouther tickit cost me 350$. Well its ok this will only take me 2 days to drive back and it will be some good together time.So we fly in pick up the truck first thing I find is the gas gauge doesent work so on the way to the gas station the breaks go out so I slide into the nearest statoin shut off the truck fill the tank check the break fluid of course there is none and ask the attendant how far to the nearest parts store. Jump in the truck to start it and nothing. Pop the hood and see the batt cables are probably the originals give them a little twisting and she fires up. So at the parts store I buy new cables and some break fluid and a few tools to do the job and we are off to Nebraska. We make it across Idaho with no problems except there are very few places to stop for gas food and lodging on the road we too and had to go all the way to lolo Montana Be for we could stop for the night. Net morning we start out with a full tank of gas and drive a good 100 miles and not haveing a gas gauge stop and fill it but the truck seems to run fine well we keep going and of course I forget about the miles we put on till... your right we run out of gas .To have a tow truck in Montana bring you 5 gals of gas cost 160$ Ok we need to pay attention to the mile markers better. 40 miles down the road she just up and quits running pull off pop the hood check and see if its getting gas yes pull a plug wire and check for spark no.. we are at the off ramp for a very small town but thay do have a gas station but no mechanic but there is one in town and with some help got the truck pushed over to the mechanis house and he comes out to look at it well not look really CUZ HE IS BLIND! I *#%^ you not.But we do figure out that the points are shot and the neares parts store is 20 miles down the road and its 6 at night and there closed so anouther tow truck is called to tacke us to town were we spend the night and in the morning I walk to the parts store and get 3 sets of points get back put them in check out of the hotel and jump on the interstate. 5 miles down the road we start gettting a vibration and gets worse every foot we drive pull over and look under the truck to find a ujoint on the rear shaft has faild so I pull the shaft off throw it in four wheel and back to town for some ujoints. back on the road agine no problems all the way to wall So dacota where the left front tire blows but we are in town but I dont have a jack or lug wrench but I do have a spair so we get AAA to come change it(did I mention its 6 degreas out and we have been driveing in white out conditions the last 100 miles? So the guy comes out breaks two lug s off before he figures out there left hand thread get the tire changed an on the road again. Make it all the way to sloan Iowa 70 miles from home wene we come up on a 40 care pile up on the interstae but with the grace of god we are not involved except to sit there for two hours in the blizzard conditions till the state patrole shuts down the intrstate and turns everyone around and heads them back to souix city BUT! by slaming on the bracks to avoid the accadent I blew out both front wheel cylendrers and now have now breaks and of course none to be found in souix city so 2 days later wene thay reopen the interstate we rent a car and drive home leaving the truck in souix city till I can round up parts.

So in the end the $750 to have it shipped would have been well worth it unless you like adventure. The trucks isn't an Adventurer, is it?

Wow! I thought the story of my dad bringing my truck home and the motor locking up halfway up the driveway was bad. 9 years later and 6 motors, here we are today! But geez! That luck you had on that trip is about the worst ive heard of! Well, I hope you have better luck with it in the future! And welcome to the site!

Yikes! That's particularly scary to me, as I'm driving that same stretch of highway, plus some, a week from now in my Dart... Hope you enjoyed some of the trip.

Sounds like the only good news is: the wheel cylinders can be bought new at just about any parts store.
Good thing your wife went with you, cause I doubt she would have believed you if she didn't

:welcome That sounds like my kind of luck. Glad to hear you guys were not part of the big wreck. Sounds like you have had quite the adventure, but at least by the time you get it home you'll have a new truck.

I feel your pain brotha. I too live in NE. Bought mine on ebay for the paltry sum of $150. Crew cab, short box, uteline. Got shipping quotes of $900 or more. Knew I could retrieve it myself for way less, so grabbed my buddies trailer, my brother and my dad, and headed for Redding Ca. Blinding snow storms, motel stays, blown tires, fragged wheel bearings, and traffic tickets ensued. Long story short, great vacation, but one expensive truck.

This is what should have happened to Fred and me with the W500, but instead the Truck Gods smiled and we sailed her all the way back non stop no problems. The key on these deals is to take a chase truck out with you loaded with tools, parts, and anything else you might need - makes things a lot easier, having to walk very far is a real problem.
